When I was younger I used to keep good count but after a few years I lost count. I am 35 and have been hunting for 18 years so the number is around 50 to 60. I have killed a buck in all but 2 seasons.

RE: Total deer harvested???
I started hunting in 1966 but I really didn't start deer hunting until 1976 as I had school and was deployed in the Navy every hunting season till then. I didn't shoot my first deer until 1985 belive it or not. there wern't many deer in the North East back then. In 1985 I was stationed in Va. and my oldest son was 12 and his first deer hunting trip and I finnialy got my first deer and with him it was even more special. He is now 32 and I started with that deer a respect book and I write down every deer I ever shot and how it happenend weather tep and everything else I can think of I now have shot 87 Whitetails 32 Bucks 55 does and 18 Seika. Ever since that first one they seemed to keep on comming. Mike

|
RE: Total deer harvested???
I'm 25, been hunting since I was 9. First deer killed at 14.
12 deer - including three bucks 100+ inches. Also, five hogs, and about 15 squirrels. :) |
RE: Total deer harvested???
I have taken 1-2 deer per year, since I have always just hunted with a rifle for going on 20 years now. I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 deer so far with many years to come with rifle and now bow.

RE: Total deer harvested???
Quality, not quantity! I get more enjoyment passing imature deer than I ever would killing them!

RE: Total deer harvested???
i have been hunting for two years and i gave killed three deer. One sika spike on the eastern shore w/ a crossbow, one large doe with my savage 270 in WV and a little button buck (thought it was a doe) with my savage 270 as well in WV. I would have another doe added to my list but my friend told me not to kill a doe for the first few days b/c he wanted one ofusto get a buck. so i passed up about 15 does, lol, and then never saw the buck. then when i went back in on the last day of the trip, i ddint see anything lol. i learned my lesson. this year im gonna kill the first "respectable" deer i see (no fawns lol). hopefully my kill # will increase :)

|
RE: Total deer harvested???
I'm 41 and have been hunting since I was 12.
114 deer 53 were with a bow 58 with a rifle 3 with a muzzle loader I hunted in West Virginia and PA. Most were does and most of my bucks were small. I'm not what you call a trophy hunter. For a While I use to average 6 or 7 a year, but since the kids started hunting I only get 1 or 2. Now I play hunting guide. My daughter is 16 and has taken 12 deer and my step son is 17 and taken about 18. He also hunts in Maryland with his uncle. Here's a picture taken a few years ago during youth antlerless season. |
RE: Total deer harvested???

RE: Total deer harvested???
The reason my numbers are pretty high...I don't hunt public land...90% of my deer hunting is done on land owned by me or family members...farm land in eastern NC...We raise corn, soybeans, peanuts, cotton and wheat.
Deer eat all of these...cotton not as much as the rest...About 20-25 years ago we could count 25-60 deer in a field...A deer can eat about 12 pounds of forage a night...There went your profit...My brothers and I went through about 10 years of really working on the excess population... We now see 6-10 deer in these same fields...and...the last 3 years the bucks have really put on more mass, because of the higher quality forage during the winter and the rut is more intense...In other words, we are actually seeing bucks looking for does...In NC the season and bag limits are pretty liberal...If you farm, they are even more so. |
RE: Total deer harvested???
started huntin when i was 12..now 17..1 buck and 3 does all taken with rifle. last year i came up empty but only got to go out for 2 days late in gun season so wasnt much left. this will be my first year for bow so hopefully i do well.

RE: Total deer harvested???
This thread got me to thinking. I couldn't just rattle off how many deer I have taken so far, not that that's a huge number. But began to feel like I should know, if for nothing more than my own personal respect for the deer. And you never know, a small little boy may be really interested when he starts itching to get into the woods. So I created a spreadsheet listing year, location, buck/doe, points, weight (live or dressed), weapon used, and finally a remarks column that would allow me to put down any interesting characteristics of the deer or the hunt. I did one for turkey too. Just a thought.
By the way, my total: 19 - 9 bucks, 10 does...and I am really proud of that ratio. Good luck and hunt safe. |
RE: Total deer harvested???
Haha this is an embarresing question. Um 2 deer in the 4 years I have hunted. But, I have learned alot and I hope be bowhunting I can do a whole lot better. I also have land to myself this year for the first time since I started hunting. So that may help.

RE: Total deer harvested???
My main question is this,
I see alot of people posting 70-80 deer in a span of 20-30 years, even a few saying 100 or more in that amount of time. So unless you are hunting several states every year, taking several deer EVERY year, what the h-ll are you doing? Do you need that much venison, or are you just bootlegging that many just so you can killthem? I've had my share, and I've let pass several that could have been nice, just because I knew "I didn't need to kill it". |
RE: Total deer harvested???
My family eats 3-4 deer a year, and we give some away besides to friends, relatives etc. Also, I cannot speak for other states but Iowa has an outstanding donated venison program(just started though) where all you have to do is take a deer to the meat locker and chip in a fraction of the cost. I know many hunters who participate in it....the meat goes to the needy but, interestingly a big portion goes to the state prison system, (havent desided what i think of that yet) Dont know about other states.
I have seen what some 'hunters' (not in my book) do though...dumping whole deer in ravines, or just cutting off the backstraps, maybe a ham, etc. They are the ones running up a score[:@][:@] |

I've had my share, and I've let pass several that could have been nice, just because I knew "I didn't need to kill it". Alabama's bag limit is 2 deer per day for the span of our 110 day deer season. I'm hunting about 15,000 acres in the Black Belt of Alabama. Only myself and 3 or 4 other guys hunt all this land and there are deer everywhere. Pretty well all we take are does and mature bucks. I've taken close to 150 deer myself and less than 20 of them were bucks. Overpopulation is a huge problem in this part of the country so a significant number of deer have to be taken. As far as what we do with the meat, this also happens to be a very rural area and is the poorest county in the state. I have no problem giving deer meat away. Nothing goes to waste. Most of the people that have these high number of kills, live in states with incredibly overpopulated herds of deer and long liberal seasons.N.Carolina, S.Carolina, and Alabama always seem to be at the top of the list. The crazy thing is even with some people taking this many deer every year, the herd continues growing. Evidently, some of you people from states where you only get to kill one deer, need to come over and shoot some more of the dam things. They're running around here like rats. |
