RE: Total deer harvested???

We don't waste any..If we don't need they go to families in the area that do need them...I process my own, have my own grinder and turn alot into hamburger, alot of people don't know what do do with a whole ham, but they can make chili, spaghetti, tacos, etc...btw...We kill about 40-50 on our farms, have for 10-12 years...How does that grab you???:)

Some where in the 100-200 range. I've lost count, but my average is about 5 per season.

With a bow, I know exactly - 11.

My main question is this,
I see alot of people posting 70-80 deer in a span of 20-30 years, even a few saying 100 or more in that amount of time. So unless you are hunting several states every year, taking several deer EVERY year, what the h-ll are you doing? Do you need that much venison, or are you just bootlegging that many just so you can killthem?

I've had my share, and I've let pass several that could have been nice, just because I knew "I didn't need to kill it".
We usually eat 5 or 6 deer a year. We make lots of jerky and smoke some too.

I give alot away to relatives. My grandmother, and aunt love venison, but they don't hunt.

I also have several co workers, that always ask, if I get an extra deer, they'd like to have one.

On the property we hunt now, we usually give the land owner a deer or two. He doesn't hunt, but loves deer meat. I think it is a fair exchange considering that between me and the kids, we usually get 4 or 5 off his land. None of the other hunters even offer. He once told me he was considering posting his land but he'd letus hunt it. He is always grateful when he gets a deer. I wish he would post it, but he hasn't yet.

When I use to hunt West Virginia, you could legally take 7 deer a year then. There were lots of deer and usually by noon, on the first day, everyone got there buck. They were small but they were legal.

To those whom live and hunt areas where the limits are high because of over population, or whom hunt many states so as to be able to havest that many, I appologize if you tookmy questionas against you.

But I can't help but consider that there are those who may come across these sites and find such statements as proof that hunters are interested in nothing more than killing as many animals as they can.
And for those who are new to the sport, and don't realize that it may be a case of "feeding the whole family" and/or being in an area where it is legal and needed to havest 2 per day for the entire season, to realize that it is not what they may be able to expect.

(heck, I've helped a few farmers with cull-permits before myself, and I get my bonus tags every year so I can harvest my 2 or 3 that we are allowed. I'm not talking about when it's right, I just am trying to consider how it sounds.)

RE: Total deer harvested???

I can see your point.

The anti hunting public are on the other side of the fence anyway. Yes ,they consider all hunters, blood thirsty killers, whether they kill one deer or 10 deer a year.

Hundreds. I have been deer hunting since 1956. Quite a few before that with my 22 before there was a season in our area. I have taken from 8 to 11 for the last 15 years or so. We had a big family that all likes deer meat. I am a meat hunter and seldom buy buck tags.

Ive been hunting for 20 couple years and for the past ten years I have been averaging about ten deer per year. Prior to that it was about 7 per year. II donate a couple a year to Hunters for the Hungry and four families consume the rest.We eat deer meat all year long.

Where I am located we are only allowed 1 deer per season. I have hunting deer 13 seasons and have got 4 bucks and 6 does. So to sum it up I am 10 for 13 (we are also required to apply each year to be able to shoot a doe, they do a computerized draw. My bucks were 2 spikes a 5point and 7point.

RE: Total deer harvested???

Shaftnem, I know what youre talking about. I hunt in alabama as well and on our tract its so overpopulated that each person is supposed to harvest up to 36 doe per year to even out the population. So killing 100 plus deer over a 20 to 30 period is nothing.

I also live in Bama and started hunting hard last Season that means getting out there and doing all the work my self and even with the high bag lemit I only killed 7 last year 4 doe's and 2 buck's and both of them needed to be takeing out. I have nothad to buyany meat for my family this year besides a T-bone ever now and then. Deer meat saves me alot of money and none of it go's to weast.

This thread got me to thinking. I couldn't just rattle off how many deer I have taken so far, not that that's a huge number. But began to feel like I should know, if for nothing more than my own personal respect for the deer. And you never know, a small little boy may be really interested when he starts itching to get into the woods. So I created a spreadsheet listing year, location, buck/doe, points, weight (live or dressed), weapon used, and finally a remarks column that would allow me to put down any interesting characteristics of the deer or the hunt. I did one for turkey too. Just a thought.

By the way, my total: 19 - 9 bucks, 10 does...and I am really proud of that ratio. Good luck and hunt safe.
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING. I SHOULD KNOW. SOMEONE MENTIONED THEY WRITE DOWN IN A NOTEBOOK THE DEER THEY HAVE KILLED, WEAPON, WHERE, WEATHER, DATE, AND OTHER FACTS. THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA AND PROBABLY WOULDN'T TAKE MUCH TIME,SOUNDS A LOT LIKE YOUR SPREADSHEET IDEA.
I KILLED 11 LAST YEAR, ONLY 4 BUCKS WITH THE BIGGEST BEING A 7-POINTER WITH ABOUT A 17" SPREAD. I KNOW I KILLED 2 WITH MY BOW, 2 WITH MY MUZZLELOADER, 2 WITH MY .270, AND 5 WITH SHOTGUN. BUT AS FAR AS DETAILS I FEEL LIKE I SHOULD REMEMBER MORE, AND I DONT EVEN WANT TO THINK ABOUT ANYTHING PAST LAST SEASON I'LL FEEL OLD. A CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE PROBABLY SOMEWHERE BETWEEN
125-150 WITH SOME DESCENT BUCKS AND LOTS OF DOES,JUST ASK MY KIDS WE LOVE DEER SPAGHETTI.

NEW61375 07-06-2006 08:52 AM

RE: Total deer harvested???

ALSO, I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO ME TO TAKE NEWCOMERS HUNTING. I LOVE TAKING MY KIDS. SOME OF MY CLOSE FRIENDS THAT DON'T REALLY HAVE TIME I'LL TAKE THERE KIDS. BUT THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS I'VE BEEN TAKING SOME OLDERBUDDIES FROM WORK AND OTHER FRIENDS AND IT HAS BEEN A GREAT TIME. SOMETIMES I TAKE FOR GRANTED HOW LUCKY I AMTHAT IHAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP IN A HUNTING FAMILY AND WE HAVE OUR OWN FARM AND PLENTY OF OTHER OPPURTUNITIES TO HUNT. I STARTED NOTICING A LOT OF MY FRIENDS AND CO-WORKERS SHOWED SOME INTEREST WHEN I WAS CONSTANTLY OBSESSING OVER HUNTING SEASON AND USUALLY I WOULD JUST BE LIKE "OH, DO YOU HUNT?" AND IF THEY SAID "NO" I DIDN'T REALLY THINK MUCH ABOUT IT. BUT THEN I STARTED ASKING WHY NOT? YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED HOW MANY PEOPLE WANT TO HUNT BUT NEVER GREW UP AROUND IT AND FEEL INTIMIDATED TO ASK SOMEONE TO GO. SO I MADE A POINT TO TRY TO TAKE SOMEONE NEW EVERY SEASON. NOW THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE I WON'T TAKE BUTIF IT IS SOMEONE I TRUST AND IFEEL IS SAFE AND OPEN TO LEARNING I'LL TAKE THEM IN A SECOND. LAST SEASON I TOOK A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE AND I GOT HIS FEET WET BY SHOOTING BEFORE THE SEASON AND THEN WE DID A LITTLE BLACK POWDER HUNTING WHERE HE HAD AN OPURTUNITY TO SEE SOME DEER AND EVEN MISSED A NICE LITTLE 6-POINTER. WHEN SHOTGUN SEASON CAME AROUND WE GOT TO GO AND ON HIS FIRST HUNT HE GOT A BIG DOE AND THE VERY NEXT WEEKEND HIS FIRST BUCK, A 5-POINTER. IT IS SAFE TO SAY HE IS HOOKED AND I HAVE A NEW HUNTING PARTNER. AND HE REMINDS OF THAT SPARK, THAT EXCITEMENT I HAD WHEN I FIRST STARTED HUNTING AND ITS A GOOD FEELING. SORRY IM' SO LONG WINDED I JUST HAVE TOO MUCH TIMEON MY HANDS I GUESS. ANYWAY, MORAL OF THE STORY: TAKE SOME TIME OUT OF YOURMONSTER CHASETO TAKE SOMEONE HUNTING AND TEACH THEM WELL.

RE: Total deer harvested???

A lot more does than bucks, butI have shot 6 bucks in 10 years of hunting. My best being a 172" NT.After shooting a couple of bucks I began only shooting bucks that would go on the wall. For meat and QDM Iaverage 2-3 does per year. Shot my first doe with a pistol last year.Almost as proudof that deer as I was the 172" buck.I enjoy watching my little brother and younger cousins taking deer more than I like shooting them. One of my cousins shot his first deer ever last year while sitting with my dad. It ended up being a 184" 16 pt. NT that no one has ever seen. I was just as proud of him as I would have been if I shot it. It is good to see younger kids get into this great sport.I don't believe it is all about the number of deer we shoot or put on the wall, it is just about all the experiences and relationships that you build while pursuing wildlife. I have been just as content sitting in my stand 2 weeks before season watching a field full of deer as I am on the first day of bow season with a weapon in my hand. I just love being in the outdoors and enjoying everything that goes with it.
