I love my lab ,but I think the best all around dog is the one that will listin to ya no matter what. will love you uncondiutinaly (sp)even when ya have a bad day, and accidentally beat em cuz they didn't listin to you or they did't come to ya when ya call em ,fast enough and they will stay by your side till your dying day. that is a good dog in my book.my first Shar-Pei Bubba was that way. now my lab puppy Koda is learning that also

I have a Black Lab - Deleware breed - the best friend I think I have ever had. Got him for a 12 pack of Coors - full blood lab and the best Goose, duck, pheasant, etc worker I have seen.

Blue Healer! I've had alot of dogs over the years from springers, setters, and labs mostly but I have found none as devoted and willing to please as my Blue Healer 'Freddy'. Saved him from a farmer who was going to shoot him, got him when he was 4. Totally different dog now that he gets some attention. English Springer Spaniels are great dogs but the 2 I've had have gotten cranky with old age, Labs are top dogs for family and the field, and the English setter that I had was just a pup when he was hit by a truck...... he needed time to come into his own but he was clumbsy and stupid, yet at the same time very smart if it makes sense. My next dog will probabley be and eng setter for the field and hope the healer teaches him how to act w/ family.
You guys talk of badgers and coyote' in particular..... I think any dog worth his salt that loves you and your family wouldn't back down from much. My healer doesn't know what back off is once he sees one of the family in danger..... but I can call him off in mid air.
