Best all around dog

What's yalls favorite dog, and I'm not talkin bout fer eat'n. I mean the best all around dog that you can throw in the back of the truck and take her anywhere you go. Note: If you mention a dog that weighs less than 40 pounds I will ask the board moderator to delete that post, no need for nancy dogs in this thread! My fav is the good ole Lab. Mine would take bullet for me.

Labs are hard to beat, I bought one for my grandkids several years ago and she will be impossible to replace. My favorite dog I have had was an old bluetick male. Old 'Coon' was just smart.

Smokey, Nice jab there about Penn State. "Better Pass it" Any true Penn St. fan will cringe when he hears that old quote. Are you a true Penn State fan? For the record, JoPa is the last ofa dying breed. It will be a sad day when he leaves the sideline for the last time.

I have had a chocolate lab (Sugar)for nearly 11 years that as was said before will be impossible to replace. She is truly my best friend and constant companion. I really don't think I will be able to get another lab after her.

I had 2 male Dalmations for years and last year the last one passed away. I went about 5 months without a dog and really missed them. When I returned from a Newfoundland hunt we had a new member of the family. She is a little black and white lab mix and she came from the devastation of Katrina in New Orleans. She was about 5 months old and real skinny. She has grown and loved the snow all winter. I live on the lake so she is really enjoying the water and chasing all the ducks and turkeys. Her name is Fanny Mae and I swear she is the best dog I have ever owned.

lab/beagle mix, I hunt with two of them and they have everything going for them; great for deer and waterfowl, good with kids, energetic but they will listen. One of the dogs I hunt with is an awesome duck dog and good deer dog, the other is an awsome deer dog and good duck dog, both are great companions.
This is Booter, hes deer addicted.

This is Dewey but we call him Max Power, hes real good with waterfowl but we will never forget him retieving a deer that died in a pond, dragged it right to the shore.

Guys,

The best all around dog is bar none, a chihuahua of any kind. I ahve one that is a mix with a dachsund and has some terrier in her and let me tell each of you, she demands respect.

She is a compact little thing and she loves the woods as much as her owner. She is as protective and feisty as they come and absolutely will whip the hind end of any of your labs or otherwise.

Had her track 3 deer last fall and she is known around my parts for finding the elusive whitetail wherever he may roam. Never for personal gain, though.

If you like bigger dogs, I would say german pointers. They will retrieve, track, point, drive.
But really sir... Dont mock the small ones! Any hunting breed ofterrier wouldbe as hard a dog as anyone would want. You cant say its wuzzy to eagerly crawl down into a badgers hole, and pin the inhabitant down to the point that it can be dug up andshot.

LMAO...........now thats funny

i just got talked into getting a yorky, i let myself get talked into this for the simple fact that im getting it for free and i already have breeder lined up to give me $3500 a liter. if it wasnt for that i would be getting a lab

TOPDAWG i think that maybe you are a little bit confused.

"She is a compact little thing and she loves the woods as much as her owner. She is as protective and feisty as they come and absolutely will whip the hind end of any of your labs or otherwise."

I guarantee your little chihuahua would not "whip" my black lab. When molly (my dog) was 3 i sat in the dining room and watched her run off a coyote that jumped out of the woods on her. I can pretty much assure you that your chihuahua could not fend off a coyote. I would love to see that if you think it could. I hate them little yappin dogs they are worthless all they do is yap and yap and dont shut up its annoying. So i just think you are a little bit confused.

But back to the topic... black labs by far.

Well I am getting ready to have another Bday in a few weeks and I am getting a German Shepherd. Can't wait. It is from a rescue here in KY for German Shepards.

For me the best dog always seems to be the one that finds me and sticks around. Breed seems to be irrelevant in this case. I haven't had too good of luck picking them myself.

AntlerAddict07,

two things:

1) I demand respect

2) 320 Bench

your lab is a nice dog, I am sure. I bet she is a real treat to have around. Probably even made many special memories with her at your side. Hey, she's a nice dog. I would think she is very friendly and a pleasure to have around. maybe even fetches a ball and brings it back too. Just a real pleaser.

HOWEVER, nothing compares to that of a chihuahua when disturbed or threatened. I have seen my dog attack everything from horses to turtles and I assure you she has always been the victor. She simply has no fear and will let you know if you are too close for her liking. Grrrrr....grrrrrrr, she says, as people and animals alike lay down in submission. Need to find a deer? Well just call my old dog and she will find him.

Again, I think your dog is tops and I hope you will post some pictures on the site one day so we can all enjoy some of her fascinating tricks and such. That sounds like a whole lot of fun, guys.

Nothing beats a lab! We used to have a chocolate and he had the best dang nose on him that he literally used to embarass other hunters who brought their dogs with them pheasant hunting. They'd run over birds...and when we'd look back...that big dope would be waggin his tail 100 m.p.h. begging for us to investigate. He just always knew :)

TOPDAWG im glad you are some macho man lifter ill show you some respect for that. If I could lift half of that I would be excited. Theres some respect.

But...labs are still the best always have been always will be. End of story.

RE: Best all around dog

If I also hunted birds or ducks I would say a Deutsch-Drahthaar.They can do it all from point to retrieve, ducks to quail , track rabbit to track down your wounded deer. All of that and a good family dog to boot. But being that I only deer hunt and then only need a trackng dog for myself and others. I will stick to the breed I have now and say the Bavarian Mountain Hound, goes everywere you go loves to be around you, will give you as much love as you want and then some and is good with the kids.

Then again any dog that works for you, loves you no matter how long you leave it in the kennel is a good dog.

I've got 3 Labs and a Springer...
As importantant as breed is, It comes down to the character of the individual dog and the amount of quality time/or money the owner is willing to give to hone those skills and traits that the dog has.
I have seen only a handful of dogs that are good at what they do without training....
The rest are good because of training, or a complete disaster because of lack of it....
