Default Tricks of the Trade...

I'm sure many of us have some clever "did ya know" kinda things that can be used in the field while hunting.

As an example:

Try this using a watch:

Point the hour hand at the sun. (Even with a digital watch, we know where the hands should be)...

Half way between that point and the 12:00 point on your watch points to the south.

Please feel free to share so we can all benefit....

natural scent control.Brake evergreen branches or expose some smell of hardwoods by skinning a little spot of bark ,Dig up dirt for fresh earth smell. If you have shunk cabbage break some leaves. If any cattle near bye always step in the floppers

It's never a bad idea to carry a magnesium fire starter in your pack or pocket when hunting in larger unfamiliar forests , a sudden change in the weather could force an unexpected overnight stay and that little block of metal can mean the difference between a cozy fire and death from exposure . Cheap insurance , easy to use , and it could save your life .

I agree with that. I have one and it is "survivor man" recommended.

Here is mine: if you get lost or turned around DON'T PANIC. [:-]Been there, done that.[&:]

crazy as it may sound. i jog the grounds i hunt, out in the open, no camo, no sneaking around or stopping. it's amazing how close you get to deer when your not in that killing mode. i try at least once a year hunting in civies with no thought of stealth or camo. never got a deer but i know that will change soon. i think it's that the deer get use to me and just know I'm no threat. last year i got real close to a buck but was actually just jogging and didn't have my bow. if i had that 8 pointer might be on my wall. this seems to only work however early in the bow season. give them a couple of weeks and they know the game has begun.

1. For your deer stand's pull up "rope", NEVER use a rope that could
possibly hold more than about a 1/4 of your weight. If you slip going up
or down and become entangled in the rope. An arm or leg could be
dislocated and your neck, well............you wouldn't be pretty when
someone found ya.

2. Always wear a safety of some sort while in/on your stand. Either a full
harness or I have actual seatbelts on all our ladders cause most of us
just sit in them, they work great. ( $5-10/each at boneyard + a couple
nuts/bolts/washers )

3. Always have a plan and "file" the plan with SOMEONE! If you can't make
it back or out safely, no one's gonna be looking for you if they don't
know you are missing or overdue. Include where you're going, when
you're going, when you should be back, who you're going with, where
you intend to park, which direction you intend to travel or area you
intend to be in.

4. Lastly, my Mom always told me......................go potty before you
head out!
