Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I love hunting, but one of the spookiest things in the world for me is walking in almost complete darkness to my stand. There is just something about it... it is so quiet and you can hear every little movement being made out there. All I can think about is that guy from Friday the 13th... then I remember that I have a badass weapon in my hand! Let that a-hole try me!
|
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
Yeah, especially last year, but this year I'm pretty well over it. The thought of killing a deer walking down to my stand sort of overrides the thought of a bear or somethin jumping out at me.
Besides why should I be worried, if something messes with me I have a 30-30. |
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I never get scared walking thru the woods in the dark. I know my area backwards and forwards. Occasionally, I will hunt a new area and will get frustrated and even anxious because I wish I knew the woods better as I try to locate my stand in the dark. I honestly don't understand how anyone, especially someone with a weapon, can get scared just because the woods are dark. Lost is one thing, walking to a place in the woods that you know very well is another.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
im the same as trapper dave...started chasing coonhounds through the woods when i was 7 or 8...us coon hunters could go on for months on things we seen and heard out there...but the important thing is were both alive and nothing is out there to hurt us..cept a few things might but there isnt really anything there to hunt you down and kill you...and you figure coon hunting we have lights...sure i did...but it was rarely on..sitting there waiting for the dog to tree or strike a track it was off...when walking on a trail of any kind it was off...my dad was wierd about that..he doesnt think o hes 8 he might be a little afraid...but now i can go out there in the middle of the dark and be comfortable...theres nothin out there no matter what you here...dont let your imagination get to you..

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
Mauser06, after seeing that pic in your sig I'm afraid to go in the woods again at night time.
haha just kidding |
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
Anyone walking through the woods in darkness, with total silence, with thoughts wondering to sunrise.......and then the shrill of an owl right above you goes off and you don't freak....BS.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
Yeah 06 I agree with 131 what is that pic supposed to be? It reminds me of a wolfman or something.
|
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I dont get scared,Ive been startled before by jumping rabbits and pheasants.
Would this scare you if you ran across it going to your stand in the dark ![]() It's not how big the Deer,But the size of the experiance that matters!! |
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
Walking in the dark woods doesn't scare me as much as walking in town after dark. I don't live in a bad town, I just don't trust people as much as I do deer. Jim

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I pretty much grew up in the woods too , so it's not scary walking to my stand in the dark. BUT , when a grouse takes off a few feet ahead or you hear the spine tingling scream from a screech owl from above , thats enough to make me fill my drawers every time.
BTW carpetguy , if I saw that on my way in to my stand in the dark , you'd find my bow & arrows , probably my boots , and a big steaming pile where I was last standing when I seen it.<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> Edited by - bowfanatic on 10/23/2002 20:50:15 |
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
During hunting season there's no problem. In the off season, when I'm unarmed, I try not to surprise any bears. There is one sure test to see if something's watching you: Open your zipper an try to relieve yourself. You'll know if someone/something is watching you.

I remembered what the outfitter said,"if you get to thinking you're lost, you ain't....you're just turned around abit".... RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I don't get scared of the dark, lions or bears. Here in California you always take the chance of walking into some knuckleheads pot grove or meth lab.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
The only time I was scared was walking out of a new property one morning. I'm coming down a halfgrown logging road, when about a hundred and fifty yards ahead I see these things running towards me. I raise the binoculars, and I see it's about 5 or 6 pit bulls barreling down on me. I have a bow, a stand on my back, bulky rubber boots, I'm thinking I'm screwed. I back against a tree and start to knock a arrow, figuring I'm gonna shoot at least one of them. Well, they keep coming and I see they're coming for me, they must have saw me walking down the road. There's some old shacks down the lane, I figured some inbred's dogs got loose and I'm gonna get eaten. They get about 30yds away, I draw my bow, and something doesn't seem right, they peel off and start running in circles as fast as they can around me. They're puppies, LOL. I couldn't tell through the binoculars, then I was too scared. Little fellas met me every time coming out of the woodds all season, and would run around me in circles the whole way down the road.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
Although this isn't the woods, the only time I get nervous is walking the dark desert during the early November deer hunt because it usually hasn't gotten cold enough for the rattlers to go away yet.
|
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I get scared when I hear the noises at night. Early in the morning is not as bad, but when night falls, that usually gets to me for some reason. I could hear a mouse fart, and i'm looking around in circles. I always feel thoses noises are closer to me than they actually are. Call me crazy but I just start talking to myself thinking that whatever it is making that noise will be scared off.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I love walking into the woods in the dark. The cool crisp air, the clear sky and bright stars, the owls, the silence...it's invigorating! My only fear is that there may be some idiot I'm walking past who could decide to loose and arrow or bullet in my direction upon hearing my footsteps or glimpsing my shadow. I often keep a small flashlight turned on and pointed at the ground so anyone who may be around can tell I'm another hunter and not some imaginary superbuck they can't resist shooting at.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
If I wasn't armed, sure, I'd be a bit apprehensive. However, I'm carrying a .30-06, a .30-30, or a 12 gauge, along with a .357 or a .38, and I could very well handle whatever I came across.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I usually only get scared when walkin back to camp and one of my camp mates decides to jmp out of the brush and scare the hell out of me.
Save the sport. Take a kid hunting twice and hook them for life!!! |
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
the only one time not buddies bear or deer darting from a nooontime snooze. The one thing was walking up within 10 feet of a skunk. I practically S&*T in my pants. Think about it the smell would have permanented all through my clothes I would have been on my way home the car would have smelled to no end and my day of hunting beginning at 5:30 AM would have been over.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
first day this year me and my buddy was walking to stand and as we would pause to catch our breath we would hear noises. didn't really think about it till we split. then as i walked towards my stand i could hear every little thing in the woods. it was 45minutes till day light so once i got to my climber i quickly scurried up the tree. then i felt a lot better. but ever since then i have been fine. i guess that first morning back in the woods was alittle weird.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I have been in the woods all my life and I am a very large man. Having said that I will admit that there are times I get terrified
in the woods at night. Espesially alone. With hunting buddies it is different but I believe that people can pick up on bad vibes in the area or a "disturbance in the force" so to speak and it effects them. From swamps to foothills I have learned that there is something to fear out there in the dark that defies explaination. |
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I am usually never scared in the woods anytime day or night. However, once I was walking to my stand about 5AM and a Grouse flushed right beside me....now that got my attention!
Another time I was ground hunting and sitting on a rock drinking coffee waiting for first light. The buck I was after that day deceided to play "sneak attack" came in behind me and started snorting, and pawing.....I had to laugh afterwards... needless to say he busted me early, and I had hot coffee all over my camos. Odd as it sounds although it has never really scared me, I agree with Coyotefeeder. Once in a great while, there are some spots that you happen onto while in the woods, you know somehow you are just not welcome for some unexplained reason. And that is a very strange feeling to have. |
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
HOOOOO Boy when I was a young pup me and my little brother would have had some fun with you all, we used to love to take friends for a walk to the store on moonless nights. We lived 1 1/2 miles back on a dirt road that wound its way down into a swamp, we would always tell them stories about a civil war cavalaryman who lost his head and was rumored to roam the swamp looking for his head. We would always say that we felt it was just a bunch of hooey, but it got them thinking. The great thing about passing though the swamp was it was dark as hades and it was almost garaunteed at least a rabbit or something would go ripping through the honeysuckle right beside the road, the best reactions were when a screach owl would cut loose!!! LOL We used to scare the caca out off some of our friends when they let thier imagination run a little wild, of course me tossing a stick down in the woods at unexpected moments probably didn't help thier nerves either.
Actually I have gotten scared a few times in the woods, twice by grouse coming up right in front of me and once at night when I aproached a buck and doe at an inappropite moment, the buck was not real happy and I slowly walked backwards away from them until he took off after pawing the ground, but I just am not bothered by things in the woods unless they are real and loud. RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
i have no problems walking out in the dark since i got my night vision but about 20 some odd years ago i was hunting up in oregon when i walked into a clearing that was used as a ritual sight, the hair on the back of my head stood up but i ignored it and kept going, getting into the clearing there was an alter with old dried up blood all over it and candles everywhere. scared me so bad i ran out of there and never went back. this was before cell phones and never thought about calling the authorities. every once in awhile i still have dreams about that day.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I was going to reply:no,i've been stompin'around the Woods for over fifty years.I'm more scared to walk in the park,in my Hometown.
But Sixpoint's post reminded me of the time when,at well past four 0'clock,I was still a couple of miles back. I was not really hunting now, just making a compass East;looking for the trail. Suddenly,a little Screech Owl piped up.Instntly,I'm thinking about Mountain Lions jumping on my back.It was a loong trek to the trail. Once I got there,I could walk faster, and relax,a little.I relaxed enough to realize that it was only an Owl,and I had made a Fool of myself. RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
I have to agree with Coyotefeeder and Christine B - there ARE places in the woods that I have happened upon in broad daylight that have really raised the hair up on the back of my neck. On one instance I was deer hunting in late November on Admiralty Island, working along opposite sides of a muskeg meadow with an experienced, no-nonsense friend. It had snowed 3-5 inches the night before and the air was clear and cold. He was in plain sight, and I saw him kind of go into a crouch and look slowly all the way around. I figured he must have crossed a fresh track and I moved along - keeping an eye out for movement or deer sign.
I went another 10 feet or so and got the creepiest feeling like I was either being watched by something, or I was in a place where I didn't belong. I stopped and checked-out my surroundings, but I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. My partner was looking right at me when I looked in his direction, and motioned at me to come across the meadow. I backed across to where he was standing. The first words out of his mouth were, "Man, this place gives me the 'willies', I'm not going any further". He pushed up his shirt sleeve and his forearm was completely covered with goose bumps! I agreed with him and we worked our way back down to the beach and our skiff and called it a day. Others have sheepishly mentioned similar circumstances over the years and have attributed it to a nearby brown bear or somesuch, but I know it is a very unpleasant feeling that I would just as soon not experience again. |
RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?
During Rifle season im always thinking about who im going to run into thats on are property. but when im bowhunting for some reason i always get freaked out and start thinking about Blair Witch. i would recomend to anyone who hasnt seen it to not watch it.
i was fall trukey hunting this year and i was a long ways into the woods when i got this really erie feeling, like i was being watched, i walked a little furthur and found a pile of rocks, about the size of a casket and at the top of the pile was one big rock(head stone im guessing). they looked like they had been there for a long time bc moss and plants were taking it over, but needless to say i didnt think about nothing else but gettin out of the woods. its a scary thing to find when your by yourself. |
