RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

What a cool subject...Yesterday morning, I got to the land I was hunting an hour and a half before daylight. I walked the first 300 yards by starlight, then stopped and loaded my Remington 700. I felt instantly safer, but I had another half mile to go in the dark to my stand. I crossed a broad meadow, where the grass seemed to glow pale green in the light of the stars. The land I was familiar with in daylight, now seemed like an alien landscape and had quite an unreal quality.

My blind was set along a long thin treeline and I refused to use a light to find it. I walked along in near blackness, passing it by thirty feet or so, then instinctively stopped, walked slowly back and stopped where I felt it should be. I extended my hand and there it was - the thin mossy oak material I had stretched between two small bois d'arc trees. I moved to the back of the blind and sat, feeling now like the predator instead of the prey. As I had plenty of time before first light, I lay back on the cold ground and looked up at the stars. I felt like the only human left on the planet - but my rifle laying across my chest told me not to worry.

Was I afraid, walking through the blackness? Yes, but in a totally exhilarating way. Of course, we don't have brown bears in Texas. Just cougars, coyotes, bobcats, feral pigs, wild dogs and bigfoot. How can it be so delightful to have the hair stand up on the back of your neck for twenty solid minutes?

God, I feel sorry for peple who don't hunt.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

In the early fifties, I had to walk about 3 miles at 4AM to milk cows in what we called the lower farm. One farm next to us had some mean dogs that I had to dodge everyday, my dad gave me a squirt gun filled with ammonia that kept them at bay after a few squirts, then the next farm had a miserable holstein bull that spent more time loose than in the pasture, so we would have a race every now and then.
Then at eighteen I was at an out post in Germany and the PL forgot that he had me two miles out in front to keep people from entering the woods where the morters were being fired,he left me there all night, raining, no food,no matches, no water, by the time that night was over and the early mornings at home, nothing bothers me in the dark.
I have seen two different bears in my yd and they are seen in the area all the time. I just hope that there are none when i go out.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

pretty funny stuff!! A few years back i was lucky enough to get an invite to go hog hunting on a very exclusive game ranch in Three Rivers,TX. We arrived at the ranch late on friday evening; at which time we were greeted w/ several strong cocktails and the usual insult's (being that my buddies and i were all in our mid twenties). Well needless to say morning arrived to great antisapation. we were about five miles from camp and the guide asked "who's getting out here"? Being that i was the newest to the annual trip, i was thrown out on my rear. but as i was getting my port. chair, field pack, and gun the guide came up to me and said "be ready, there are a bunch of hogs running this crossing". well it was about 5:30 and i'm sitting in the dark w/ my only cover being a not so tall mesquite tree. all seemed to be going well so i started to load my .338 weth.mag. and thats when all hell broke loose! not a minute after i got the 200grain bullets loaded into my rifle i started to hear movement about 10yds behind me. i sat as still and as quite as i could when a squeel that sounded like a train hitting its brakes let out right behind me. after i regained my senses and removed my soiled underwear, i realized it was a large group of hogs. needless to say, i spent the next 45 min. with my butt off that chair, and facing the bush where the hogs had been.

Even though the first part of the morning was some what eventful, within 1 hour of sunrise i had 3 hogs on the ground, my first hog being a true black russian that weighed almost 300lbs.

Hope that taught 'em a lesson.

also had an intresting hunt that evening when i got my first look at a mountain lion.

Used to a little.

Don't know why it doesn't anymore.

Was walking in the woods & through some meadows the other night after tracking down a deer and there was a ton of ground fog. Flashlight made it worse. Kinda cool walking in the foggy dark listening to the 'yotes.

Didn't have a fear. No super predators (other than man) in my area.

I rolled out my sleeping bag under a spruce tree in a clearing one night. My hunting partner had seen elk the morning before there, and there was no way to approach it quietly. My partner was at the uphill end, and I was at the bottom. About 4:30 or 5:00, a squirrel jumped on me, and I nearly jumped out of the bag. I heard hoofbeats all around me. If I'd have just slept till sunup or a bit before, I would have woke up in the middle of the herd. (Yeah, I guess I was scared)

Woods at night spook me. One season, to get to my stand I had to walk 2 miles along a dirt road that was bordered by dense woods on one side. Then, the last 200 yards, there was a graveyard alongside. I used to dread that walk.

I'd be lying if I said that my imagination doesn't get the better of me sometimes.....I've just about all things that has been said, the dragging of estrus and getting mauled(or worse) by a lovesick buck....a bear smelling the fresh apples in my pack....but the thing that gets me the worst is hearing a Coyote howl or a Bobcat sqawl....carring a bow bothers me just a bit more than carring my .06.....but again, when I get to my stand and get up in the tree, I usually enjoy myself from then until dark......

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

I've only been scared once when I was rifle hunting, a buddy and I went out, walked across a quartermile cornfield and when we got about 30 ft from the tree line, a mother mountain lion started calling her kits, ya know that high pitched sounds like a woman shrieking sound. Scared the heck out of both of us.

I get pretty freaked now when I bow hunt there because of that, but a lot of times I'll carry a .45 acp with me, I asked my local ranger about it, and he said that the him and the other guys around there wouldn't grudge me that, so it's cool and all, I just hope I never have to use it.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

I always prided myself on being able to find any spot in my area of woods in total darkness. I also bragged about how I was never afraid of the woods at night.

Then one time while I was bowhunting that changed real quick. It was an hour or so before sunup with no moon. I got settled into my ground blind and closed my eyes to listen to the peacefulness of the forest around me. About 10 minutes later a tomcat started letting out some godawful sounds about 10 yards behind me. The worst part was in all my years I had never ever heard one before. I was up and out of those woods as fast as possible and told everyone I had heard a bigfoot or an Indian ghost. Boy did they laugh like heck when I described what it sounded like.

The only other time I have been spooked is when deer snort at me from about 5 yards away on the way into my stand. It usually happens about twice a season and it still gets me every time.:)

one time in oregon we went hunting to an area that was new to me, the guy i went with said that we had to go this way and i said that no let's go back the way we came, after arguing for about 10 mins i figured that he knew where we was......WRONG...... it took us almost 2hrs to get back to the truck, in the mean time it got dark,no flashlights,no moon,no city lights, nothing, on this one stretch of road we walked under this canopy of trees and talk about not seeing anything, it was like walking into a bad dream, all you could see is spots in front of your eyes, have you ever heard a bear or smelled one that was about 15 feet from you and you DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU ARE????????? all we could do was try not to pee our pants and scare off the dang critter without shooting each other or messing up our pants, we started singing the rest of the way to the truck. now i always carry a flashlight or my night vision.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

ive been freaked out three times while in the woods. first time was hunting. I was walking through some what of a familiar area. it had rained and was wet, i was walkig too close to a ridge and slipped in the mud down a hill. i slid on my butt about fifteen yards when i finally hit the bottom of the hill, keep in mind it was totaly dark. I couldnt see ANYTHING! just as i tried to stand up i felt hot breath on my face, and just as i could feel the hot breath i heard the snarling and growling. i have no idea how i got back up the hill so quick without slipping again. second time i wasnt hunting. i run to keep in shape and i like to run in the woods. it was a saturday afternoon and i decided to go for a jog, but take a different path this time. i was running down a trail kinda following the squaking of a flock of canadian geese that had landed in the area when the path kinda turned a corner and all the sudden i got this really cold feeling that just stopped me in my tracks. something instinctive was telling me "DO NOT CONTINUE DOWN THIS PATH". so after standing there for about a minute i turned around and ran back the way i came and the further i got, the better i felt. it was very erie. the third time it was snowing and i decided to take my jeep off raod in the snow down a short logging road. i had just turned onto the logging road when about 25 yards in front of me i see a small black animal cross my headlights and just behind it i saw what seemed to be a small child with a black cape/cloak chasing the animal. it seemed strange that a kid would be chasing or walking his dog at 10pm in the midle of a snow storm waering a cape 2 miles from the nearest house. so i drive up to where i saw the "things" and followed the footprints in the snow, they contined in the road until the road turned to the right. along the left side of the road was a small creek that followed it about 15 feet wide. the foot print ended at the creek but did not continue on the other side, nor was there any cracks or footprints in the ice where the creek had froze. i got back in my jeep and left the area.

Really, here the only thing I worry about is rattle snakes in the early bow season. This can be a big problem and yes I have found them out. They are hunters also and like us the early snake gets his or her meal.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

I just always seem to have problems with Cattle on my way in to my stand. Last season the farmers had a herd of cattle out there, and one would always follow me into my stand. One day I was walking in, and cut through a little gully. I didnt realize it, but I had inadvertantly cut between a calf and her mother, needless to say I got my but chased for a while. We didnt think we would have problems this year since The landowner got rid of the cattle for us. Well we were wrong. A neighboring farmer let two cows get loose, on of em is a real mean tempered bull. Wehn I was walking in the dark last time I thought I hear rumbling, sure enough its the bull charging across the field at me. I have never ran soo fast in my life, I was almost to the gate, and noticed it was wired shut, so I just decided I would rather take my chances with the barbed wire fence then the bull. I have no idea how I did it, but I managed to clear a barbed wire fence that was even with my navel, mind oyu I was carrying my Bow, and wearing heavy clothing. I hit the ground and laid there for about an hour before I got the nerve to hunt. When we told the farmer about it he just said that he was going to go shoot them, but the meat locker was full because of deer season, so we had to wait. He did give us permission to blast em if they come after us again though, so who knows, I might be taking a bull with my Bow.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

I generally dont get scared often, although I flush a pheasant in the dark every so often and gives me quite a start. But Because of the following 2 events on pitch black nights there is always a little something stuck in the back of my mind.

I only remember actually being Scared twice.

This first time was about 5 years ago when i had just finished climbing and especially large and steap hill to get to the pasture i had to cross to get to my stand. It was a moonless and cloudy night, you couldnt see your hand infront of your face. I proceded across the pasture, when i heard a little something to my left. I continued, then a little something behind me, then to the right, then infront of me, I stopped. I dug to the bottom of my Fanny pack to retrieve my little maglite which i carry incase i have any issues with my climber.
I clicked it on, cows everywhere, I clicked it off. Realizing the cattle from the next farm had knocked down the fence and were trespassing. I had just finish speaking to the guy next door the week before about his cattle and had been telling me how one of the bulls he had was crazy aggressive and to stay clear of him, ( had permission on his land), I turned back the way I came and made it out, but for a split second there it was the first time I was ever really scared. I wouldnt have never seen him coming.

Then The second time was last Year:

Try actually being hunted by coyotes. I had watched some coyotes chasing some deer around underneath my stand just before dark. The deer escaped and the coyotes began to fight with each other. Darkness fell and I climbed down, knowing they were still close but not giving them much thought. Then about 100yds into my trip back, I hear them slipping thru the grass behind me and they begin to growl. I sure they have mistaken me for a deer, but i unquiver a broadhead none the less, I figure i can take em if i have too. I give a couple hoots and hollers but they are undetered. They begin to gain ground and I break into a run, swatting the arrow behind me as I go, figuring its not too far to the truck and i can make it before it gets to serious. I get the truck in sight, but then one circles in front of me and begins barking, trying to get me to turn into the pack. Luckily for me by this time I had gotten close enough to the truck for my hunting partner who luckily had beaten me back was able to hear the growling and barking, He jumped in and started the truck and hit the horn. They disappeared. It could have gotten ugly.

And thats why when I walk in or out in the pitch black there is always a little something in the back of my mind, what next?

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

A mind can be a powerful force filled with imaginary fears. Generally these imaginary fears are the worse and I have fell victim to them. Other times that were real was one with a pack of coyotes that howled and followed me. That was not fun. The worse was when I stepped in the middle of a large covy of quail. I had one hit me in the face and another in my stomach. Talk about crapping in your pants. I yelled, danced and about had a heart attact. I had no ideal what had me for a second.

4 am in morning going duck hunting in south texas. it was our first trip down to this lease and the guys the night before warned us of the gators that lived in the pond we were to hunt. well my buddy and I get out to the duck blind and it is time to throw out the decoys. however, to get the decs out where they needed to be, required one (or both) of us to get in the waist high water (wearing waders of course). Well he makes some lame @ss excuse about his waders leaking and says he will stand on shore holding the flashlight while I throw the decoys out. Keep in mind it is still pitch dark out. I finally break down and trudge out into the murky water and start throwing out the decoys (all 2 dozen). While standing out there, I keep hearing movement in the weeds beside me with an occasional little splash. Talk about being scared. With gators around, YOU are the prey and they are the predator. However, everything went smoothly but I guarantee decoys have never been thrown out faster than that day. That was one of the few times I was actually that scared. Needless to say, I shot four ducks that day and he only got one. ;) Serves him right.

BTW, we did confirm that there were 2 - 5 foot gators in that pond when we spotted them a little later.

Greg-D, I had forgoten about the quail. It does tend to unsettle you when they come up from under your feet.
I think the only other time that I got that feeling that starts at your toes and works it way up your back was when I was coming out of my hunting area heading back to camp.
It was in Oct. and it was a hot night. I could see very well so I was not using a flashlight. I was about 300 yards from my camp when all of a sudden it just got quiet. I walked a little more and then all of a sudden it felt like I walked into a icebox. There was no wind or anything and no water around that might cause it to cool off.
I did not see or hear anything but boy I got that feeling and I picked them up and put them down geting out of there.

There is just something about it... it is so quiet and you can hear every little movement being made out there. I used to be scared to death to go into the woods alone at my grandmas property. Ever since i was little my dad used to tell me stories about seeing cougars on their land. when you walk it walks when you stop it stops , it adds to the excitement. It makes you think who is hunting who.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

this reminds me of a funny story that happened to one of my hunting buddies. one evening my buddy was walking out of the woods after an evening hunt. he had his treestand hanging on his shoulders w/backpack straps. he had quite a long way back to the truck and it was pretty dark. he said all of a sudden he heard something behind him. every time he would take a step whatever was behind him would take a step because he could hear the leave rustling. well he was getting kinda nervous because the faster he walked the louder it got and he just couldn't seem to get away from it. every time he stopped it stopped. he started yelling "get out of here", "i have a gun and im not affraid to use it", nothing would make whatever was following him go away. finally he couldn't take it anymore and started running full steam. he no more than got a couple of steps when he was yanked to a stop and his feet flew straight up in the air and he landed flat on his back....he said he just knew he was toast and bigfoot or whatever was following him was surely gonna tear him to peices. he lay there waiting for the end to come, but nothing. he tried to get up and couldn't move. wondering what the heck was going on and why whatever just slammed him to the ground wasn't finishing him off...still flat on his back, he pulled his flashlight out of its holster on his fanny pack and shinned it behind him. there he saw his bow pull-up rope w/a dog clip on the end of it hung up in an old dead fall and was stretched out so tight that he couldn't get up. evidently his bow rope had unwound from around his treestand while he was walking back to the truck and the dog clip on the end of it was draggin in the leaves some 20 ft behind him.....LMAO. i get a kick out of that story everytime i think about it. and everyone in deer camp had tears in there eyes the first time it was told there.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

Here is one my buddy sent me to post.

Here’s one that comes to mind regarding being scared/worried. A friend and I went backpacking in the Northern Cascades. We hiked all day until we reached the area just below the treeline of the mountains. We made camp and got comfortable. As the night went on, we decided to partake in a snort (of JD or JB I can’t recall) or two. My friend decided to hit the rack before me, so he crawled into his little pup tent went to sleep. Well, I guess my friend didn’t know his limit because not 20 minutes later, his stomach decided it didn’t want the beans we had for supper in it any longer! He didn’t make it out of the tent in time. It was all he could do to get the flap halfway open before his belly had its say. He mopped it up as best he could with some dirty socks, but there wasn’t anyway that I was going to sleep in the tent now! He decided to leave the tent flap open because “The cool air felt better”. I put my sleeping bag a few yards away next to a large rock went to sleep.

OK, now that the stage is set, here’s where the scary part comes in. Sometime in the middle of the night I’m awoken by something touching my feet! I freeze as rush of adrenaline shoots through my body and the hair on my head stands straight on end! My mind is racing through the possibilities as to what might be touching me (bear, cougar, psycho, sasquach). My reaction informed it that I was aware its presence, so it began to move. The problem was, it wasn’t moving away. It was moving straight up alongside me! Pressing against me the hole way! Believe it or not, here’s where things cool down a little. By its movements, I make a quick guess as to its size and what it might be. It felt like a porcupine or skunk, so I decided to lay there and let things pan out. It slowly moved away for me, and headed toward the tent. Here’s where things get going again. I’m laying there listing to it enjoying my friends recycled supper! Inside the tent! What the “H” was I to do? If I wake my friend how is he going to respond to having a visitor inside the tent? Being face to face inside a pup tent with a porcupine or a skunk is not a good way to be awakened. Once again, I decide to let things pan them selves out. After several tense moments, I can hear the thing begin to move off. I wait for a little bit and than go over and get my friend up. I relay the chain of events that just occurred, but due to his state of being he seems unimpressed. I force him to drink some water to rehydrate, and zip up his tent this time.

It wasn’t until morning that he was fully able to appreciate the situation. We found his socks not far off. We made fun of the situation, and decided that Mother Nature truly is the best housekeeper!
