Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

I was wondering ...if you were lucky enough to shoot a monster buck ..lets say its 150 B&C or larger ...and when you got to the buck you realized he had a couple of broken off tines and maybe the main beam has a couple of inches missing .. would you fix it when you were having it mounted or leave it like it was whenyou shot him ... and why?

i would leave it, things like that, to me, add character to the deer. i just think it makes it look cooler.

I would leave it the way it was. I don't think many people get things fixed that were broken before they saw the deer. I could see if a point broke off if it hit a tree when crashing or some thing but that is different. To me that is like telling your taxidermist to add a few inches to a fish you caught. It isn't the fish you caught and it isn't the deer you shot.

Leave it the way it was, that's how he died and thats how he'll stay.

I think its disrespectful to the animal to modifyit's rack after you shoot it.

RE: Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

I agree. If you're going to "repair" a rack, why not add a few points while you're at it? I'd never do that, but I wouldn't be offended if I was looking at someone's mount, and they said that they had fixed it. It's your deer, do whatcha wanna do.

I would leave it, he didn't have that horn when I shot him, so he shouldn't when I mount em'.

RE: Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

I want to remember it the way it was when I took it. If I wanted a
built rack it would defeat the purpose of hunting. The only way I would have a rack repaired was if i shot a deer and it ran into a tree and broke a tine off and it was recovered. No inches added just repaired.

I would leave it the way it was when I shot it. I don't feel right about making it into something I didn't see. If that makes any sense.

RE: Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

leave it how it was.....unless it broke when you shot it...like busted the beam or something wild...i know a guy that shot an AWESOME non-typical......running broadside when he shot...got there..the other side wasnt there...kinda sad.....but it wasnt there when he shot it.....still an awesome buck....absolute monster for our area...be neat to see it with the other side....but my buddy went to finish a buck off and pulled the shot in the excitment and blew the mainbean right inhalf......he had that fixed.....i agree with stuff like that...but if it was busted up when you shot it leave it alone..kinda makes me mad with ARs....has to have 4pts atleast an inch long.....last season i passed a buck....im pretty sure he had 4 on one side.....but they were all busted off nubs...

I was not suprised by every reply that said to leave it the way it is. I don't think I know anyone (in my hunting circle) that would have that rack repaired.

Just a fair question with predictable results.

Leave it. The one I got this year had one of his points broke, and when I get him back it will still be broke.

RE: Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

I would leave it the way it is. I have killed a couple that have had broken tines, to me it just makes them unique.

This one has a whole tine broken off behind the left G2. It would have been a double G2 had it not broken off.

The deer on the left in the picture has it's right G2 broken in half.

I would not repair it in any way. Whenever anyone saw the buck, I would get a chance to tell the story, because people would wonder:D

Okay, here's a wrinkle:

Imagine that you shot a tine off, and found the tine?

My buddy's first buck was a huge 160 class 12 pointer (okay, HUGE for Massachusetts) and in his eagerness to keep the buck down he basically unloaded his shotgun at it (the first shot hit the spine and it wasn't going anywhere anyway, but he didn't know that).

His third shot took off the top 6 or 7 inches of the G3. We found the tip and he had it put back on by the taxidermist.

Trem personally I see nothing wrong with that ...considering he's the one who shot it off ..

Every deer is different and the rack should IMO be as shot.

I got this buck a long, long time ago.

RE: Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

I still get laughs now-a-days for getting him mounted with half a rack. The main reason I got him mounted was because he was an unusual red color instead of brown.

RE: Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

imperfections = character

the 8 point i shot this year had an abnormality and it's being mounted as is. on the bottom side of the right main beam, there is a 1/4 inch diameter hole in the antler. i dunno if someone attempted to poach him with a .22 when he was in velvet or if an insect/twig made the hole while in velvet.

Yep! That's old "Big Mouth Billy Bass" himself. My kids (5 & 7) get a kick out of him. :D

RE: Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

If a buck has more then a few inches of his rack broken off, then I will NOT shoot him. I've killed deer in the past that had minor things broken, i.e brow tines and antler tips, some times I had them repaired and other times I didnt.

BTBowhunter 02-19-2006 06:43 AM

RE: Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

The only time I would consider a repair is if the rack got broken by the shot or during a death run and the other piece was found. Otherwise, it's not the deer you shot.

I killed a 13 point in Oklahoma during their 2005muzzleloader season that should have grossed around 145, but he had his G2 broken off at the beam. I would have mounted him had it not been for the broken tine. He would have been my second largest buck ever behind my 2004 178" buck and right in front of my 1997 140" buck. I killed a nice 10 point (120")here in Texas and decided to mount him instead. I am going to do a European mount on my Oklahoma buck. I have had several friends suggest that I get the rack repaired, but that would not be the deer that I killed. For me, what he has when he hits the ground is the way he stays.

I personally couldnt bring myself to shoot a buck who had broken tines. I want to shoot bucks who have complete racks. If he has a few broken points then he will almost always will get the pass card......

RE: Big Buck ..Broken Rack ..What To Do?

Biggest buck I ever shot has a big chunk missing right at the junction of the left g2 and the main beam. it is the perfect size of a 12gage slug The slug alsobroke off 2/3 of the right g2. it hangs on my wall in the same condition.Great conversation piece. I wonder if whoever shot him first was looking at anything other than the rack?

I am postingpictures of my 2004 and 2005 Oklahoma muzzleloader bucks both of which have broken points. The 2004 buck gross scored 178, and the 2005 grossed 140. First of all, I watched both deer before I pulled the trigger and had no idea that anything was broken, but I find it hard to believe that you oranyone here would pass on either of these bucks because of broken tines.
