"Recommending" that someone kill a rattler could be illegal? Where exactly did you go to law school? I'd like to steer my son clear of it...

Just to ease your mind, and so you don't start calling district attorneys to try to have the guy in the picture prosecuted, the only reptiles on the endangered species list in Texas are a variety of sea turtles. No snakes. Perfectly legal to kill them anytime you want.

DD, I just sometimes argue with things that don't appear true, I know, its a real character flaw! Plus I know snakes....
This snake is between about7 feet long and weighed 25 punds at the time of the picture.

man oh man,,,so many opions. I'll tell you what, I walked right past a rattler in florida walking through the woods.(probably almost stepped on it). It started rattling and uncoiling toward me..What would you have done? Probably what I did for most of you..the rest of you would have ran or what ever. Lets just say rattle snakes taste a little like frog legs. it was a good 4.5-5footer. if I remember correctly probably only weighed like 5-10lbs at the most...It was like 15years ago. ........... at least I didn't waste it. ipscshooter, get your facts straight. There are a dozen snakes on the texas threatened specie list.
1) Timber rattler
2) lyre snake
3)blackheaded snake
4) pine snake
5) green snake
6) concho water snake
7) brazo water snake
8) cateyed snake
9) indigo snake
10) scarlet snake
11) blackstrip snake

Go to google and look up threatened reptiles in texas.

Rooster, nice albino. I had a burmese python that was 17 ft when I bought it and when I gave it to George Van horn at reptile world it maxed out 21 ft long. I would use it at various schools and conduct seminars with it. It just got kind of expensive going through a chicken or rabbit every week.

I hear you, my boy was about 12 feet when he passed away, he was an eater too, expensive snake!

DD, that was when he was a youngster, wish I had some pics of him at 11 or 12 feet, and he still ver weighed 100 pounds, which is why I doubted that rattlers size. Either way that is one seriously big rattler! I would have let it live (got a soft spot for reptiles) whether it was legal or to kill it in TX I don't now, here in NJ there are a few Timber rattlers and if you kill one you are in BIG trouble!

121553: I had reviewed the Texas Parks & Wildlife Division's "Endangered Species List" before replying to you, not realizing there was a separate list of "Threatened Species". You're right, there are a number of snakes on the threatened list. The only rattler on the list is the canebrake or timber rattler. The one in that pic looks like a western diamondback, not a canebrake. Since it's not on the list, they can be killed... not that I'm advocating that. And, your earlier statement that "recommending" (over the internet!) that someone kill something is illegal is still incorrect, even if it was on the list.

I don't like snakes but I have seen my wife catch rattle snakes by hand. She has no fear of them whatsoever. Up here they rarely get over 6-7 feet long. Four-Five is about average.
