Winter range in the deep snow states usually involves dense conifer woods like swamps and protected valleys. The deer migrate and concentrate to these areas because it provides shelter from the wind and there is usually abundant browse. I have gone in some of them in the spring after the snow is gone and the deer droppings are steady all along what was run ways in the deep snow. It shows that they will stay in that small area to live until the snow goes away unless they are pushed out. They do this to conserve energy. People going into these yards in the winter will push the deer out causing them to expend energy needlessly. IMO it is a good call on the DEC guys and the shed hunter was wrong to harass the deer. He should have known better.

The feedback to this post seems to be definately split between the deep snow areas "understanding" the fragile balance that wildlife playsin making it through the winter and the lighter snow and southern areas thinking that laws like this are a "bunch of crap"! I'm sure that wildlife can make it through the winter easier in some areas than they can in others. A deer in Georgia has a much easier time finding food in January than a deer pawing through 3 ft. of snow in Idaho! Let alone the temperature differences in the two areas. I think laws like this have their purpose.

After they fined him they should have dunked him in water & droped him in the deer yard to spend all the time he wanted looking for sheds.

Jerk!!!!!!!

I definately agree with this statement. You guys down south spent anytime tracking in deep snow. Here in South dakota I've done it pheasent and hunting and deer hunting. Now just imagine how much energy you expend when you do that and your tired and want to go sit by your fire place. These animals are out there 24 7 and don't need to be put through the stress. Also which deer are probablt going to suffer the most. The bucks of course cause they lose alot of their fat reserves just breeding the does. Ticket him and boot him out of the state. Down south preferably

Send him back to Alaska. Probably going to carve crack pipes from those sheds anyway.

I think you have adequately described those who seem to think what that guy did was OK...
