Yes, it is true.
I have not found it too attract deer to the point where deer coming running to it, but I use it in the woods where there a lot of trails, and I want to establish a main trail. I find they work pretty good in pairs, about 75 yards or so apart. Put them out early in the year, and a bigblock will last a long time.I place my stand looking at the trail in between the salt blocks. Of course, you had better check your local game laws for legality, and I take no responsibility for anyone who may be reading this if they get in trouble.

We have put some rock salt out, too. It seems to work. We spread a lot of it around and the deer seem to use it a lot.

Rock salt will dissolve faster than a block. I would put a salt block on top of the rock salt in a rotten stump if you can find it and after the rock salt dissolves the deer continually come to the block. I have noticed from the two salt blocks that I have that they lick and wattle a hole in the dirt around the block before licking the salt block. Its always a good ideal to have a trough of water near by as that will be there next stop. I usually watch them from my kitchen window regularly as I have seen some of the same deer for 3 or 4 yrs.
It usually takes a good year or two for the deer to startmaking it a part of there routine.

Try using a mineral block instead of salt. The mineral block has more than enough salt in it and it will last alot longer that a salt block. The block will not do much for you during the bow season as I have been putting them out for about five years now and have only had two deer use it during the fall. Put it out as soon as the snow stops and the deer will tear it up untill about late summer. My spot now is about six feet in diameter and has a hole in the centerof it about six inches deep and a foot and a half around in the center. I just put it out to help with their overall health and antler growth after the hard winter. Also dont spend alot of money on "deer" mineral blocks just go to your local farm or agg supply store and buy one that is for cows and horses, a fourty pounder only cost about six bucks and will last almost all year.

Hotburn, mineral blocks may be good, but it depends on the location. I have one about 10ft from one of my licks and its been there for about 6 yrs and the only thing that hits on that here is the squirrels and rodents.
I also forgot to mention is you want that salt to dissolve in the ground ASAP, than after you have your rocks and block in place is to pour as much water on it to get the salt into the ground.
Usually most of the near miss collisions with animals that I have are when they come down and eat the salt along the roads.
