DD scores again ... #10

I will not be posting a picture of this buck simply because it is not a "trophy" and I do not want to be reported to the "trophy police" on here but I will tell the story and you can take it for what its worth. I went to a small piece of property about 20 min from my home here in north Alabama. I really was not planning on hunting but really just wanted to scout a little to see if there was any rut sign...all I wore was some jeans, boots and my orange as it was pretty warm today...really did not see much other then a few small scrapes ...as I was walking out about 3.00 I decided to set ina lock on we had next to a field road that runs next to a creek ..the stand is about 45 yards inside the woods through some pines which meet hard woods...I pulled my backpack off and set it next to the road and walked in.. I had set for about an hour and a halfwhen I saw a deer running up a fence line about 100 yards away through some thick woods ... I grunted a couple of times and then just listened ..I heard a deer jump a fence and I could hear him coming towards me ...I could see flashes of him walk at an angle in my direction ...at about 65 yards I raised my muzzleloader ..found him in the scope and fired ..with all the smoke I was not sure I had hit him at first but I heard him run through the pines towards the road I had walked in on and thought I heard him pile up ...I was loosing light so I got down and tried to find where he had been standing when I shot ... I found some blood and started to trail ...as some of you guys know from some of my post I do not see well anymore and was having trouble with the fadding light finding blood ...but I was sure I had heard him fall ...after about 20 min and getting a little flusterd becasue I could not see well I decided to walk out to the field road to see if maybe he had made it to the creek ...I look to my left and there he laid not 3 ft from my backpack right in the middle of the roadLOL ...well I loaded him up and hes hangging now ... I have an old black man who has asked for my next deer so he will be getting some fine meat ... thats 10 for the year .. 6 bucks 4 does ..

Congrats DD,
but if you don't mind me asking, if your areas are so full of deer and you don't need all the meat why don't you take up archery and give yourself a bit of a challenge. I wouldn't be nearly as hardcore about hunting as I am if it was as easy as you make it sound.
Where Ilive its 1 tag per year/hunter (except for a few archery only areas where we can buy additional), and I still prefer to be out with the bow. If its your health try out a x-bow.
Not bashing you at all, congrats again, I'm just curious.

T.S. I am 54 years old and bow hunted since 1973 ..almost 33 years ... I just can't see well enough up close anymore to be able to focus on the pin and the deer at the same time and have no interest in just wounding an animal ... I did buy a crossbow this year and will use it next year after I have had some time to practice ... I used a M/L today instead of a rifle even though it is not M/L season (all weapons season)... its really not THAT easy but I have had a good year .. I am lucky to hunt in an area that has a lot of deer but not a lot of "trophy" deer ...we hunt very small tracks of land here in Alabama so its very hard to try and manage deer ...

S.F. my secret is just putting in the time ... Im lucky enough to get to hunt a good bit in a great area for deer ... as for if I am going to stop ..I have stoped shooting doe's for the year ...and I love being in the woods every chance I get ..so no I won't stop but unless I have family that need the meat I will be selective to what I harvest ...

PS Thanks NY ....I think ...

I am lucky to hunt in an area that has a lot of deer but not a lot of "trophy" deer
That might have something to do with shooting 5 immature bucks......

Not intending tobash, just pointing out the obvious.

If you're happy I am happy, congrats!

DD No biggie to me man.

I have read most all of your posts thats where I was coming from saying "I read the text".

also I posted no picture of the deer from today so how would you know if it was mature or not

I will not be posting a picture of this buck simply because it is not a "trophy" and I do not want to be reported to the "trophy police" on here but I will tell the story and you can take it for what its worth.
I guess I just assumed that it was not mature as any mature buck to me is a trophy.

Anyhow, water under the bridge. Enjoy your evening.

Congrats again DD! With 10 deer, you've had a great year, whether its trophies, or meat, its been sucessful!
Here in East Texas, we can kill 4, at most, and I've only taken one deer! This was a last minute, new lease, and I am going to be lease hunting soon! With all the OT,Ihave not been able to hunt nearly as much this year either!
I am a little curious about how the hunting will be for you next season though! I know that you've probably got a better deer population in your area, than I have here in East Texas. But, the season before our last season, on a fairly good ET lease, we killed way more bucks, than does. It really showed in our last year there! We did not see as many bucks, and the ones we did see were young! I hope that is not the case with you!
Again congrats on a good season!

Thank you B.F and the rest of you guys.... and let me go on record saying this ... I HAVE NEVER CLAIMED TO BE "THE DEER GOD" WHEN IT COMES TO HUNTING .... as a matter of fact I would rate myself an average deer hunterat best ... I am an above average shot with a rifle but cant hit the groundanymore with my bow ... I post these pictures and stories only because I enjoy reading about everyone elses success ... and I guess I thought this was the "spirit" of this forum ...however I have found over the last two or three months there are a lot of guys on here that just like to talk trash ..point fingers ...and brand others as cheaters and poachers ...I admit I do like to kid ..poke a little fun ...even get in a few heated discussions when attacked..I mean this was just a simple story and right out of the gate it gets explosive .. I am to the point I think this is just a waste of time ...

No DD you can call me a yankee all you want!!! You got defensive, got lippy with buckeye and this is not the first time....(for being defensive and lippy) all I am saying is that you shouldnt wear your feelings on your finngertips, get pissed, and then retract it like nothing happened as you have always done!!! I dont dislike you but you are very very tempermental and then very apologetic and a butt kisser......all i am sayin is take the criticism and grow up..per say....you have gotten this way in other forums with me and i am just sayin be more open to a little criticismman!!! Chill out!!! And congrats again on your deer!!! Wish i had the opportunity to bag more( our legalities make it legal, but our herd doesnt support it, and I want deer tomorrow!) No hard feelings,

Congrats on number 10 dd! Whack em and stack em!!

I do have to ask a question though. A few weeks back, you posted a thread where you were livid about a novice guest hunter who shot a young deer in your area. This gives the impression that you are trying to practice some restraint and selectivity. Was this buck an old cull buck orwas he a young one?Regardless, I personally would encourage you to post a pic. We should all be proud of what we bag.

I'm also glad to see you apologized to Buckeye, asking fair legitimate questions doesnt make someone a peckerhead. Personal attacks make someone a peckerhead and we have plenty of em here.

Thank you Gus ... BTB as for the buck I shot yesterday he would field dress at about 120 lbs I would say ... as for what Buckeye said ..when I read his post it seemd tome to be a facetious remark in reguards to "5 imature" bucks..Im not sure why he could not just have said "Good job" or"hey how about showing a pic" ..or any number of things but he had to make in my opinion a snyde remark... maybe I was wrong and thats why I appogised BUT I still think it was a slam ... he would have no idea as to what size or age buck I shot yesterday all I saidis it was not a "trophy"I never mentioned anything about it being imature ..that is why I did not and will not no matter how mature the deer is will post pictures on this forum again...I will share my hunting stories and success but no more pictures... all it does is give fotter for all the so called "Trophy"hunters to throw darts ..which is no big deal but it sure gets old ..not to mention I am sure most of the guys on here get tired of it to ..

Is 120 lbs a young buck or an older buck? I'm one of thoise "yankees' and know that southern deer run smaller but I dont know how much smaller in Alabama.

Go ahead, give us a pic!!

DoctorDeath 01-10-2006 07:28 AM

RE: DD scores again ... #10

BTW as far as "Yankee" bucks go its small Im sure ..as far as bucks in north Alabama its about average ... most weigh about 150 to 175 on the hoof and will field dress out around 120 to 130 ...and beleive it or not I have a few "Yankee" buddys on here LOL

For the record (for what it's worth). I'm not sure if I am being refered to as "the trophy police" or not. But, I have never and will never put anyone down for shooting any kind of deer legally. I've shot my share of young bucks in my time. I'm now at the point where I prefer to shoot what I consider a trophy buck. Just my personal preference. I am not one of those trophy hunters that believe the entire nation should adopt the same style of hunting as I do. It's just what I do and would like to have done with the people that hunt my land.

There are pieces of land that I hunt that the chance of taking a mature whitetail are slim and none. Not big enough to manage and the neighbors are more than willing to shoot anything with horns (which is fine). So I can clearly see why there are a lot of hunters that shoot young bucks. I am fortunate enough to have some other land that holds some decent bucks and that's what I chose to hunt. Who really cares? I dont' think you should have to explain yourself to WHAT you shoot to anyone (unless it's a guest on your land and you set the standards to them). A trophy is in the eye of the hunter.
