I'd spring for the slug gun, as well.

Sounds high for just a barrel, but I would opt for the slugs. Before you use buckshot pattern some different brands and size shot at about 40 yards and use your best judgement on maximum rangs. I would stick to less than 55 yards myself. I know buckshot will kill a deer at 100 yards, but for every one down there is probably one or two that are gutshot etc.
