*****story. No way especially when it was on the land on the other side.I doubt even if it was braided would one be able to drag a 120lb deer off the land into the water with 40 lb test line.

I'm not from Missouri, but you might have to "show me" that one. Maybe it was 8lb diameter line but actually a much heavier weight? I'd be quicker to go along with the story if the river had been frozen over. Then the deer would've just slid right over the ice.
