Has anyone used the 6.5x55 caliber for deer? What grain is best for whitetail and what is the caliber most closely associated with 6.5x55? What do you guys think of this caliber?
Thanks

The 6.5 x 55 cartridge is in .264 caliber. It is, in my opinion, one of the top whitetail cartridges available. The 140 grain bullet (in a variety of constructions) is widely considered great whitetail medicine, but there is actually a decent array of bullets available for the .264 caliber all the way on up to 160 grains.
It gives you respectable flatness (its not a screamer so there are many flatter shooting cartridges) quite mild recoil, EXCELLENT accuracy in a decent barrel and sectional density that is hard to beat (in the heavier bullet weights it has the "freight train" effect).
Ammo is much more obtainable than most think, with almost every ammo maker providing both vanilla loadings and premium loadings.
I think it is every bit as capable as the 7mm/08, and thats saying a lot.....since I highly respect the 7mm/08.

I love my 6.5X55 I got a old army model, My father bought 5, 20 years ago and I got one now the iron sights that come on it are pre- sighted for 200 yrd. with a scope and steady rest I would shoot at deer at 200 yds without blinking a eye. I havn't shot any big game with it yet but the old man had got a bunch with it all one shot
