RE: Catch and Release Hunting?
I would not go for this type of hunting method. To me it is not worth the time and effort to dart a deer for a photo-op it is not appleing.

RE: Catch and Release Hunting?
Fishing yes, Hunting No! It would stress the animal to much and the shock could perhaps kill it.....deer are very prone to stress. Take a camera if you want pics, and a rifle or bow if you want meat.
My catch and release is for Brookies and Brownies(Trout)......;) |

RE: Catch and Release Hunting?
Mmmmm.....I don't know. If you wack 'em with a trank more than once won't they become addicted? If that's the case, they will purposely try to find the hunters in the trees so they can get a new fix. They'll wander aimlessly around the base of your tree til they get whacked! Kinda takes the fun away, doesn't it?:D

RE: Catch and Release Hunting?
I'm not sure why you wouldwant to do this. If you have a serious problem with the killing aspect of hunting, then I doubt you'd risk the animals death by drugging it. If you just want your picture next to an enormous buck, going to a deer farm would accomplish the same thing or snapping a picture of a deer in the wild would be just as good as sitting next to a drugged deer. Not killing deer isn't an issue as they are not endangered in any way so preserving them wouldn't make any sense.
Personally, drugging an animal for a photos sake is very sad. When they do this in Africa to allow someone to claim they have "taken" a rhino I feel emberassed for all hunters. If an animal has reached a point that hunting and killing them risks the potential extictinction of their species, we as hunters need to protect the game and habitat to allow the animal to survive. Hunting is a "part" of the natural cycle, and when it threatens elimination of a creature it needs to stop and focus on other animals that can support it, just as it occurs in the wild. IMHO of course. |
RE: Catch and Release Hunting?
Thiscould beviable option for those of us who don't really need/want the meat, but just like to hunt. If you can get the thrill of the hunt without killing the animal, it might be what some people are looking for.
I'm not saying that I get all sad and teary-eyed when I kill a deer, because I don't. I have, however, killed a buck or two that experienced a little "ground shrinkage," and I've wished I had let it go. The point is that there are people out there who just like to shoot deer, and really don't want to be bothered with field dressing/dragging/processing/storing the meat. Those guys could shoot deer until their hearts are content, and do so without harming the deer population, thus leaving more (older) deer for the rest of us that shoot to kill or shoot to eat. If you trank it, and it never recovers, then you tag it and take it home. Seems simple enough. I must have a different outlook than the rest of you guys, b/c I really wouldn't have any qualms about leaving my .300 mag at home and taking the trank gun out for a little deer hunting, (but only if it was accurate). It may also make recovery after a bad shot really easy. Any hit would be a good hit. |
RE: Catch and Release Hunting?
Studies have shown drugged deer take a long time to fully recover from sedatives. Thus making them easier targets in the woods to hunters and other predatrion. Not a very good idea in my opinion. As for your problem just find somebody who does like deer meat and get a hold of them when you harvest one. I for one would gladly come and dress/drag and butcher the deer for myself. I know other people would. Just ask around.

RE: Catch and Release Hunting?
Could you thread the end of your barrel and attach a 3 pronged barrel on the end where u would have 3 missile things with nets attached. Take the projectile off the bullet and fire the nets catching the deer? I was thinking this might be good for catching them alive if I ever wanted to breed deer.
