camera equipment

wkp crew I'm wondering about video gear and would like your input on what to look for.my buddie and I are intrested in your video class and want to be prepared for it.any help would greatly be appreciated.

WKP Todd 02-15-2008 10:57 AM

RE: camera equipment

I would recommend the following equipment:

Sony PD-170 Camera
Steinhauser Wireless Mics
Monfrotto 501 or 201 Camera Head
A camera arm - working on my own design
Monfrotto or Verizoom controller

The above equipment package is going to run you between $3000-4,500.00.

Yeah - I know - it's not cheap, but the above is what it really takes to take good footage, with good audio.

If you want to start with the absolute bare minimum, a Canon GL-2, Zoom Controller, Bogan 201 head, and a camera arm are the minimum you need to take quality footage. You can get started with this package for around $1,800.00 (used).

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Todd was right with the equipment but also practice practice practice with it. You need to be an expert before the season because things happen fast in the tree, and I still have not been able to get a retake with a deer yet. Trust me I have missed some very cool stuff.

Aaron and I just officially got a PD 170. The past 2 seasons weve used a GL1 and GL2 but now to learn the PD170 functions. Hope to see all fellow WKP team mates at the video school at Todds.

Maybe I should wait for the official announcement, but who would be teaching this class? I can hardly imagine that the WKP crew, after only two productions is ready to teach us all how it should or could be done, but maybe you have a professional coming in to teach the classthan I would def. be interested. I guess Ill just wait for the official announcement.

There is only one guy that I know of, and he films for Todd alot.
Ever notice his footage is flawless and he is also one hell of a editor. I will take any advice he offers. Nice job LB

No matter who teaches the class, sometimes it's just fun for a bunch
of individuals who all have a love of the outdoors, to get together and have
great conversations and give some personal testimony. Whether it be
a hunting or fishing story or whatever.

So for the class is it a must that we have something like this video setup that you are talking about above. I myself I'm starting out cheap with a PanasonicHD 50X Optical Camcorder. I thought it would be decent for starters. I'm definitely interested in the class so keep me posted Todd.

RE: camera equipment

My first camera was a GL-2 and it works just fine, I have never had any problems with it. You don't need to spend big bucks on a camera and the equipment if you don't want to. All it takes is practice with the equipment that you have and it can turn out fine depending on what you want your results to be. Thats my word yo!

WKP Todd 02-18-2008 01:14 PM

RE: camera equipment

I will be teaching the class - Kyle isn't into public speaking too much. He will be there to assist me in the technical stuff.

No-one is forcing anyone to come to the class. I've been to several other class's that were supposed to be run by "experts" and walked away feeling like it was an absolute waste of my time.

While the class will cover camera set-up and operations - the real point behind the class is to teach hunters how to film the story of their hunt - the entire story. If anyone else is currently doing a better job of this in the hunting industry today - I'd like to know who????

We will teach far more on the technique and style side of things compared to anything. This is what is lacking in every camera person I've ever worked with.

no offense intended, I too have heard of many disapointed guys going to camera classes and spending their hard earned money to have sunshine blown up thier ars or watch everyone party more than learn. Unless you are a staple in the industry and have proven yourself overtime and lasted, many come and go nowadays, you shouldnt be telling others how it should be done IMO. If you guys want to teach your "technique and style" thats cool, your supposed to be confident in what you do, I just feel 2 yrs hasnt proven your longevity. Than I just question if your looking to make a buck, nothing wrong with that either.

Have you seen the new DVD "The Grind" yet?

FilmFever 02-18-2008 07:09 PM

RE: camera equipment

I watched "beyond the Kill" last year and didnt see a reason to purchase "The Grind" this year, if its as great as you say Im bound to see it at somewhere.I commented on the first video last year and had my post deleted, noticed a post on another sight a little whil ago andsaw some similar comments.I watched some of the footage at the Lansing show and noticed some focus issues, zooming in and out and wided out most of the time, but it was just a couple min. so I wont judge the whole thing on that, it may be your technique or style I dont know, but the comment above about flawless footage is a tad off. No doubt you guys will continue to get better every year, thats kind of the point but to proclaim yourselves pros or experts may be a little premature you think. I am by no means a pro or an expert this is just what I see. I actually thought the Slunger Hollow footage was very good, but didnt buy their video either.

scoonie.. i don't think it really matters if you have a prosumer camera or a consumer camera for the class, if he is wanting to teach style and technique.

dallas ft worth.. i have seen the grind and i must tell you that guy named dan is one ugly dude!

I'll try to make it out there.. It'll def. be a good time for all who attend..

Seems like someone's a little cranky. Don't let it get you down guys. I've seen a lot of hunting shows and videos and you guys bring a refreshing edge that's pretty unique in the industry.I think most hunters, including myself, would rather see a true-to-life, unpolished, fair chase hunt like you guys are recording than most of the other stuff out there.Your genuine excitement and passion comes through to your viewers and that's missing frommost of the other footage I see. Keep up the great work!

Geeze, I guess you shouldn't make any judgement until you see what we've done in a year. I'll not comment beyond that. Some discussions just go no where - and I recognize this as one of those!

Good luck this next year!

Todd,

Maybe you should send him a complimentary copy, it would be great PR and i can't think of a better way to get the skeptics back on board than to hear good thinkgs from a skeptic. I realize it's costing you money, but it maybe costing you more if he spreads around bad PR. just my 2 cents.

Not in the business of sending free copies to other production companies because they don't like what we're doing. You can't make everyone happy - the sooner you realize this - the easier it becomes to take the negatives with the positives.

BTW - Here is Filmfever's Website in-case anyone wants to see what he's doing:

hey when we first started this we knew and were told by Todd that there will always be those out there who will not like what were doing or will have negative things to say and that is their right to feel that way. It just par for the course. You cant make everybody happy all the time. We get far more positive feedback than wee do negative and if this guys feels Todd shouldnt be hosting or teaching a class then he probly shouldnt attend. JMO no hard feelings Im sure.

I didn't realize he was from another production company, my bad, of course he going to talk negatively towards us, that's not a got way of doing business. Me personally as a Christian, we should want everyone to be successful. I wish him the best, hopefully he'll think about his actions before badmouthing someone else. I hear the DVD is awesome this year, i hope to get a chance to see it today. Congrats. to everyone that made the DVD and to Kyle for doing such a great job with the editing (so i hear):D

I'm surprised by his comments after seeing what he stands for. It seems like he has good intentions after watching his video, this is often how us Christians get the hipicritical stamp. I must say it's pretty sad to see the video but to have the comments he made about your DVD associated with being a Christian.

This thread has probably already gone too far... Let's keep it positive and not bash anyone ok guys. I embrace different opinions and think it makes us all strive for better things. So - no negatives from here on out about anyone ok!

I don't have a problem with people not liking what we're doing. Considering that 99% of what is out there is completely different than what we do - I'm surprised we don't have more negative feedback to be completely honest with you!

I'll keep everyone posted on the school - I've got other production companies interested in working with us on this class so I have to see what their schdules are looking like.

I Agree with musky buck. I always enjoy meeting new people with the same interest as I. Its kind of sad that hunting can cause so much drama. The hunting world is full of many different opinions, no one individual is perfect and we should be able to respect that. I was able to watch both beyond the kill and The grind. I personally enjoyed both of them. Its nice that someone finally shows hunting as a whole and not just as killing a trophy. I look forward to the video class this year. WKP keep up the good work on your videos.

few, what a tongue lashing, when I looked back at what I posted it wasnt like I was bashing everything you guys do. I do hunt and spend time in creation for more reasons than just killing a big buck and enjoy sharing it from that aspect. I dont set out to bash any production company to better myself, it doesnt work that way and my little project is something I felt led to put together but is in no way any kind of competition to what is mostly out there, your productions included. Ive said before, I believe ,that I love your enthusiasm and dedication to this great sport, but in the indsustry today there is way too much self proclaimed experts, in hunting and filming, My simple point is, once youve been around long enough and stood the test of time in this industry than youve earned the right to teach others. I dont believe I was rude or defamed anyone by what I wrote but I guess, "If you dont have anything good to say, dont say anything," would have been best. I have had many critics of what Ive done and it has made me better, its always easy to bash Christians and I feel bad that I led some of you to feel that way, Im a sinner like everyone else, and by no means think Im better than anyone. Ive always appreciated constructive criticism but know that some dont. So to keep things pos. like Todd wants ,it is his site, this is my feeble attempt at an apology and only ask that you not only look Beyond the Kill but also Beyond the Hunt and give thanks to the one who allows you to enjoy it! It will make The Grind all the sweeter! Good luck as you pursue more productions in the future!

I'm glad you all could work that out like gentlemen. bravo to all for saying their peace and also respecting each others opinions! I have shared hunting camp with todd and some of his crews, had a blast, and enjoyed last years video and am looking forward to "The Grind". We all start somewhere, and for me and my puny camera that I got this year, any teaching by someone who has put together two productions is like getting it from a "pro". I may never make the big screen, but I hope to come away with some tips tomake my hobby more enjoyable. please post the "official announcement" on this forum orI wil have tobeg nevs to see it! hey muskybuck, just heard this the other day...
