Default Elk Survey.....Please Read!

For elk hunters: Please take the time to look over this survey, I am wrapping up part of a chapter on elk hunting. If you could answer each question, I sure would appreciate it, Thanks!

With substantial populations of elk on private holdings, including large ranches and reservations owned by native Americans:

How does this influence your hunting elk out west?
Would you pay to hunt trophy elk?
If planning a hunt on public or private land, which hunt do you feel you would enjoy more?
If booking or planning your elk hunt, which states in order would you like to hunt?
What would prevent you from hunt elk in the states you selected, lack of knowledge of putting a hunt together, finances, health issues, other?
With regard to elk habitat, would you know what elk feed on in the season that you would plan to hunt?

Again, I appreciate your help, if you have any idea's on what you would like to see in upcoming elk articles, please let me know, thanks again everyone.

Dr. Mike

I'd be glad to help.

As the Eastmans would say fair chase and no fences. I'm a public land hunter with the exception of whitetails. I work for the National Forest and know there are penty of places to hunt elk on public land. No influence.

I'd pay to have help with a Wilderness hunt but most of the time it's do it yourself.

As you can tell I love hunting public land and inparticular Wilderness areas as I'm involved in Wilderness management on a lesser degree.

For a true Wilderness hunt Wyoming, Idaho, never hunted there yet but probably Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Oregon.

For trophies Arizona, New Mexico,

Finances and hard to get tags are the only thing stopping me from hunting all the different places I'd like to.

I have a fair knowledge of what they eat but I like hunting during the rut so they aren't concentrating on eating much.

I'd like to see more on do it yourself pack trips as that is what I'm doing these days. More on Wilderness hunts without giving the exact locations please.

I'd like to try writing some articles too, any hints?

Dr. Mike I sent you an e-mail on your e-mail listing. Here is one of the bulls that we killed this year if I figured out how to get the pic on the post

How does this influence your hunting elk out west?
I still like to hunt elk out west and am always trying to figure out which state and area to hunt in.

Would you pay to hunt trophy elk?
Yes, up to a certain dollar amount. beyond that, I wouldn't be able to afford it and definitely not every year.

If planning a hunt on public or private land, which hunt do you feel you would enjoy more?
I would have more sense of accomplishment on public land and would enjoy the feeling of being less crowded on private land.

If booking or planning your elk hunt, which states in order would you like to hunt?
Montana, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Colorado, Oregon, Wyoming, Washington.

What would prevent you from hunt elk in the states you selected, lack of knowledge of putting a hunt together, finances, health issues, other?
Money would be the biggest obstacle, followed by lack of knowledge about the hunting area (i.e. where is a productive area to hunt?).

With regard to elk habitat, would you know what elk feed on in the season that you would plan to hunt?
I have a general idea but am always learning something new in each specific area.

With substantial populations of elk on private holdings, including large ranches and reservations owned by native Americans:

Q:How does this influence your hunting elk out west?
A:Hasn't yet...I have only hunted public land.

Q:Would you pay to hunt trophy elk?
A:Not on a fenced hunt...private land/ranch (free roaming), yes.

Q:If planning a hunt on public or private land, which hunt do you feel you would enjoy more?
A:I enjoyed my public land hunt, but would also like to go private...I would say it's a draw.

Q:If booking or planning your elk hunt, which states in order would you like to hunt?
A: Already hunted MT...future states would include, in order, AZ, NM, UT, WY, CO, MT, ID and the provinces of BC, AB.

Q:What would prevent you from hunt elk in the states you selected, lack of knowledge of putting a hunt together, finances, health issues, other?
Aefinately finances...all the rest are no problem.

Q:With regard to elk habitat, would you know what elk feed on in the season that you would plan to hunt?
A:YES
