hunting southern utah

RE: hunting southern utah
It has been a few years since I have hunted Utah so I am a little uncertain about the boundaries of the Southern Utah Hunt Unit. However, if Monticello is in the Southern Unit, there is some great deer hunting around there. The mountain on the west side of Monticello is really good but gets hunted very hard. You will see a lot of California and Texas license plates up there. Also, there are several wheat farms on the south and east side of the town and if you can get permission to hunt, they are excellent. I have also hunted the Fish Lake area which is also very good and has easy access off of I-70 via Gooseberry Road. I particularly like the Oak Ridge area and Telephone Hollow. I hope this helps a little. Good luck.

The Monticello area is in the South East, I do know that. I think that Fishlake is in the Southern Unit, but don't quote me on that. You can check that boundary at the Utah DWR website www.wildlife.utah.gov. As for when to start scouting, the bucks have shed at this point, so I would wait until June when they have grown more antler. That being said, the summer versus fall ranges down there are entirely water related....so summer scouting can be almost useless....
