Well, after a couple days of play with the Garmin, I decided to trade it for the Magellan. I like the access and menu options better. Also it will show most of the cities you are close to. It does seem to have better contact with the sattelites even inside buildings. Alot of times, the garmin would tell me poor coveage inside my house, but haven't had that problem with the Magellan. Plus hunting partner has a Magellan, so I can learn a lot more of the functions without going back to the directions.

I have played with it a lot and if I ever get lost with this thing, I will give up hunting. Not really.

The only other big difference was the Garmin lasted 22 hrs with 4 batteries and the Magellan 15 with 2. It takes the same as my radio, so if I am ever caught short on batteries, I can always steal my radio batteries for the GPS. The Garmin was a little bit bigger/wider and the Magellan only weighs 7 oz. Just my 2 cents worth, and I will take it out to some thick timber to give it a try and let everyone know.

Sorry about the mix-up Moose and Mouse. The is a big difference in the two species but similar spelling. Maybe I am getting old, who knows.

Pup, tell me where you are at so I don't have to get out an atlas, Is it Whelah???

Anyway, thanks for the input, and I will keep you informed.

Later

BRian

I found it pup, I thought I had been there before.

I finally mastered the Magellan in two days. It isn't as bad as I made it to be, once I really started playing with it. It is going to be a great tool to use hunting this year. Also for scouting, I can see where this is going to help.

Moose, I really like the Magellan and maybe I didn't give the Garmin enough time, but it seems the functions are easier on the Magellan also.

Just got home from work and real tired, so talk to you later

Glad to hear you think it's easy to operate Gator99. That is the main thing. And they are great tools. I've gotten really good at looking up locations on www.terraserver.microsoft.com and plugging the coordinates in manually. It is nice to be able to mark a spot from your living room, and go right to it in the dark without ever having been there. I haven't used the computer interface cable yet, but will definitely try that out before elk season. Some of the mapping software out there is pretty cool, and there are a lot of free sites too. They make navigating in the dark a snap too. Just remember the backlight zaps the batteries.

Well I'm now a Minivan Dad. The wife and I traded our 2000 Montero Sport for a 2001 Ford Windstar Sport. I don't know if the wife knew I was serious, but this may be my new camping/hunting rig. Just pop the seats out of the back, and I've got a mobile hotel room. It's even got a VCR with 6" monitor so I can watch hunting videos while I'm eating dinner on hunting trips. Pretty sweet. It is a year newer model and 34,000 fewer miles for about $100 less/month. That equates to some new hunting stuff for me. Y'all have a good day.

I wish I was that lucky Slee, the $100.00 in my house would go toward bills. One day I too will be able to afford new hunting toys.

Yeah, it probably will go towards bills. But if you are selective and somewhat descrete, you can pick up little things here and there without drawing too much attention. I've got soon to be 10 years experience, and I'm pretty good at it. It's all about baby steps. It's kinda like the Johnny Cash song where he steals a car from the factory piece by piece over the course of about 20 years. And if all else fails, BEG! We have the "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy in my house. If she don't ask, I don't tell.

Wash, go to www.terraserver.microsoft.com and pick a location. Once you get the map zoomed in on your particular spot, click on "Image Info". This will show you the picture again, but it gives coordinates around the borders, and it grids it off for you. You have to estimate some on the exact coordinates unless you zoom in real close, but it'll get you there. I marked a marsh just west of our camp on Coyote Creek Rd. before we went on our turkey trip to Kettle Falls, and I ended up 30 feet off the mark.
