The best spread will make the ducks land where everybody has a shot at them(takes practice). If they are not coming at all then you are in the wrong spot. You can always move them. Sometimes even set the spread on one side of the field and hunt the other. It is different in every situation. You just have to learn the ducks which takes a lot of practice.

When i set decoys, to hunt more than 1 species od bird, I use what dekes i have the most of and set the up in the U spread with other species dekes in small groups spread out around the others.

Decoy placement takes more than just a U. Make sure you know wind direction, wind speed, where the birds are coming from, etc. Wind may not play a big of a factor if its relatively calm and the birds are coming from a certain direction.
