Has anybody else ever been seriously stuck in the mud out wading around in the lake? Last year, a couple buddies and I were setting up dekes and the blind and what not. I was standing in the lake in water up to my waist trying to get a couple lines untangled. When I went to move, I realized that the mud was well past my ankles. I started to panic and tried to jerk my feet out but only got in further. My friends were trying to help me but I kept sinking. The water came into my waders. About thirty minutes after it all started, I was up to my neck and thinking that I might even drown! My friends found some big logs to stand on while they started digging. That was useless so we finally got a big stick and jammed it down in the mud by my leg. We worked each leg like that for another half hour and I finally got out. Scary as hell and we were all soaked. Had to head home. The sun was up and ducks were flying around. Anyways, when I was setting up this morning, the mud was similar but I kept moving. It made me think of that incident. Has anybody else ever had a similar situation? Matt

I was wading out to hunt and got stuck in waist deep water and sinking .
I leaned over the decoy bag and got out ,and yes I was standing still hoping for a shot at some ducks.

herters sells these little flappers that strap on to your boots. same as a snowshoe , but smaller and easier to manage. i use em on the deadly hudson river mud, because yes, you can die if you get hung up , especially in the late season!
i hunt alone alot, so it pays to be prepared.

We have mud and sand mixed in the ponds and rivers we hunt-both can become traps fairly fast. My Grandfather taught us two things-one never ever stop moving no matter what-the second was we carried an old ski pole. I hooked mine up with a sling and just carried it over my shoulder. If I ever felt like I was sinking I quickly put it down right next to the foot that was sinking and drove it down next to that foot. Same theory as the snow shoe I guess. Glad you got out and sorry it ruined your day of hunting

I have gotten stuck in the mud a few time but none that bad...where we used to hunt we had to cross a mall area of water that was only about 8-10 inches deep but once u stepped in u went up to you waste in mud...if you kept moving you were fine but once u stopped u were in trouble....we used to hunt in a swamp that was pretty much floating with about 4 feet of water under it ..that wasnt a real great idea but the duck hunting was great so i couldnt resist....
