Duck Calling On Float Hunt...
#1
I have been calling when i float hunt, i can call geese in but not ducks.
I dont know if its me or the ducks, the calls that i do are hail calls when i first see them then greeting calls and sometimes a feed call. if i call them in they land about 200 yds short of my deeks. Should I change my deek set up? i need some help guys! THANKS! Any info helps!

try sticking your decoys out a little further than usual. sometimes ducks wont feel comfortable landing in birds that are unnaturally close to the bank. if you still dont get a response, move your spread around, experiment til you find something they like a little better. remember that puddlers will most naturally sit in a more rounded shape whereas divers will form a long line. ducks, when comfortable, will tend to be more spread out, so make sure there is good distance between decoys. Furthermore, if your like most guys these days, you probably put out at least one mojo decoy. i've hunted them enough to know that they can make or break your hunt. if you are using them and birds arent dropping in like they're supposed to, put them back a little bit in the reeds or grass so they are less obvious, or put them away altogether. sometimes birds just like the old fashioned spread a little better. in regards to your calling, its way to early in the season for birds to be shying away from a properly blown call. it might help to get some good lessons, or if you think thats not the problem, you might just be calling a little too aggressively and neet to tone it down one. all of these factors combined could make a huge difference in closing the gap between you and your birds. keep adjusting til you strike the perfect balance.

Mj,
makes some great points. early on in the season there should be no need for aggressive calling. stick to the basic quacks and feeding chuckles. you will not yeild a neon sign that way! as for decoys.. I agree with mj.for example if the wind is in your face. put the decoys out around 35-45 yds. that way you have a pocket right in front of you for them to land in. Good Luck!
