Given your location, Chessie all the way. Hard, hard working dogs that love to work for the family. However, if you have a lot of people coming over, try a golden.

ORIGINAL: swamp rooster

personally since 1980 .duck huntin and be around dogs and dog handlers i have never seen a golden ret..in a duck blind or a boat or a pit..i dont know a single hunter who owns one ,they were allways the ones on the beach catching frizzbees, bringing your slippers or your newspaper. never thought they were tough enough to actually take the cold water or stealthy ,enough to hang in there.but if you got one ,cool,i can say i know someone .now who does.
Check out Duckmen 4 sometime, and get a load of 'Chet'. Thats what I am hoping mine will end up like!

He sure has the fire under him...just need to find him some more birds!

Well I have had 3 dogs and have been blessed with 2 of them. My frist was a Male American Water Spaniel very good tempered and a loyal dog. As far as hunting I was young at the time but what little I taught him and the natual ablitlity he had he was a great good for Duck Hunting. I never lost a duck with him. Then I had a female she was terrible but it could have been the neighborhood I lived in at the time cause she was afraid of her own shadow.
Now I have a Yellow Lab and He is a great dog all the way around. crazy about retrieveing birds/fowl you shoot it he gets it and wants you to throw the bird back in the water just to do it again. 100% go go go all the time when out hunting and listens great. His Motor never slows down until we get back to the Pick-up

I don't have a dog, but my brothers Goldens are very smart. They listen very well and they are excited to be out in the field.
