Leave the 410 at home and take the 20 or 12 ga. I prefer the 12 ga, but I hunt a variety of game birds under all sorts of conditions.

The 20 will handle most hunting situations, but for early-season, thick cover ruffed grouse and woodcock, late season pheasant or chukar and mountain quail, the 12 is not too big. Pressured prairie grouse and Huns will fall much easier to the 12 as well. I routinely drop birds more efficiently with my 12, than my buddies who shoot the 20.

Bring the gun you shoot better. The idea is to shoot birds, right? I prefer a 20, but have a 12 I us for waterfowl. On upland I haven't seen any difference between a 12, and a 20, and for a long time I used a 28 for all my upland hunting. An ounce of shot holds the same number of pellets whatever the guage. Just put the pellets where they need to be and the birds will fall. Have fun.

Agreed on bringing the gun you shoot better, but there's a reason the 12 is manufactured -- thick cover, longer flushes and as you have mentioned, hunting waterfowl.

No question in my mind, 20ga. Best all around gun made for upland game. 1oz load of 5's or 6's.
