Hey there. It is legal to road hunt here in South Dakota for pheasants only. Must be off the road and out of the vehicle. I don't do much driving around looking for birds. but if I know where some CRP is and a corn field on the other side. I will walk a ditch with my dog and see if there are any roosters hiding in the thick cover

Road hunting in IL is only acceptable on coyote and snow geese. And also legal if you fire from the non used section of the road and also not across it. I know of nobody that drives around all day to hunt other than those two exceptions.

Although I don't, a lot of ppl road hunt around here. It is legal as long as your gun is unloaded and in a gun case while it is in the vehicle. You cannot shoot from the road though, you have to go down into the ditch, and you cannot shoot over the road, or over the neighboring field that aligns the other edge of the ditch unless you have permission from landowner. Also, you cannot shoot within 200 yards i think it is from any buildings unless you have permission. So road hunting pretty much would limit your chances of success.

I don't know if road hunting out here is illegal or not so not really sure. Only think i would do when the dove are getting skitzy and don't come around much. One thing i will do and some people on here might or might not like this idea, is at the canals where we hunt. We will stand further down or right across the birds (if we can sneak up on them) and another person in a car will drive towards them and flush them up, then we make sure the car/person isn't in the line of fire (sounds danger the way i explain it but i assure you it isn't) That is usual towards the end of the season and very few hunters are there.

S.X. road hunting in Ca is illegal . You can't have shells in the magazine of a gun in the passenger area of a vehicle on a public road. I had a gamewarden tell me that included the back of my pickup also . This happened up by Lake Isabella ,I'm sure you know where that is . BTW a handgun must be in a locked case if its in the passenger area.
