Who's an upland hunter here?
I like all kinds of hunting, but my true passion is upland bird hunting with my GWP and LM, both excellent pointers and good retrievers. Prospects for a banner year here in NE Montana, barring hail stones! Cover is looking excellent and number of birds I have seen in the spring is awesome. Any one else on here starting to think about bird hunting this fall?

Bird hunting
I am, can't wait. But were i live in Maryland , it's getting harder to find birds in the old haunts.

Things are looking great on our ground in Central SD. Lots of grass and recent reports say it was a great hatch.
MTHUSKER, I sent you a pm to see if you had interest in swapping some hunts this fall. Let me know if you have interest. Zach |
We have Pointing Labs.
Early season, we hunt three species of Grouse (Ruffs, Blues and Franklins) and Doves. Then we hunt Waterfowl in the morning --- then go for Pheasant and Quail and then back to the duck blinds for the PM flight. . |
I'm obsessed with it. There's nowhere I'd rather be in the fall than chasing Duskys in the mountains of Colorado. Freakin spiritual

Glad there are a few of us here! Now that big game seasons are going here in Montana, I am trying really hard to still get my two hounds out for some bird hunting, was out with just them this past Saturday and was able to get my birds on my buddy's place just ahead of the blast of winter that arrived yesterday, now it's back to elk hunting, the crew I hunt elk with has taken 4 bulls, all by kids, ages, 17, 15, 14 and 12, now it is time for the adults to get in on the game. Hopefully we don't get dumped on in the upcoming weeks so bird hunting is still doable in December.

A lot of my time is spent chasing roosters in the fall.

Drove from Colorado to SD a couple of weekends ago for our yearly pheasant road trip. Not as great as past years but 14 hunters, 3 chocolate labs, 1 springer and 1 Germain shorthair got 70 roosters in 2 1/2 days of hard hunting. Our area (White Lake) was hit pretty hard with hail and the cover was way down. Unfortunately not much good pheasant hunting in Colorado. May need to make a trip to Kansas.

I hunt grouse in southwest Virginia. Can't say that we have a huge population of them. Seems like this year tho seeing a few more than normal. Had a good acorn crop.

I am in upland hunter of novice stature. I live and hunt in RI, so there isn't the great opportunities afforded out west, but I still get out. No dog, so I hunt on my own. I used to hunt a bunch when younger, but got distracted these past 15 years or so. Just being out in the woods on public land is still fun for me.
Thanks for all your posts. This is a great website. - ATG |
Count me in as an avid upland hunter. I have a 4 yr old Brittany and we hunt alot of pheasant, woodcock and grouse. Favorite guns are my pair of matching Browning Citori Feather Lightnings ( 16 & 20g ). I will always hunt big game but since I bought a bird dog I find Upland is what I prefer to do.

Late to the party, but....
upland hunting is my passion. KansasKid or fredmb, if you see this and want to get together sometime, please PM me.
Karam, thanks for sharing! |
I am - 2 GWPs too!
I love chasing grouse and woodcock more than anything. I also do a quail pheasant out of state. Shot my 1st pointed Sharptail and Prairie chicken in 2012 Ft Peirre Grasslands SD. I had judged pointing dogs for an organization more than 25 yrs. Good dog work is a beauty in itself! JW |

Great too see....cool to view people from all over the world are "Birdy"! :)

Hatches have been starting to show up here in NE Montana the last few weeks, seen lots of huns and a few pheasant chicks, be in what I consider bird hunting capital of the U.S.A. this weekend, so will have a better idea of what is going on...been a average year weather wise, just praying we avoid the big hail storms, both for my friends farming and for the birds...

Not many pheasants left here in Colorado but headed for my yearly road trip to South Dakota. Reports are that the population is up 40+%. My chocolate lab has been giving me the eye and knows what's coming. He was not happy when I went off elk hunting and left him at home. Can't wait... ROOSTER!!!!!

Bird hunter
I live in southern Virginia, am 66 years old and my daddy gave made the nickname Blasting Bill when I was younger and we bird hunted together. Our quail population is up over previous years and I am planning a hurt to OK in December. Loved the dog pictures. I have a 12 year old, a 3 year old setter and a 9 year old Britany. I hunt everything but quail is what rocks my boat.

I am 77 going on 78 and have been bird hunting since hunting quail in Kentucky - have lived in Colorado the past 50+ years and have seen the bird population decrease. Use to hunt Sage Grouse around the Gunnison area and now they are an endangered bird. Not sure the reason for the loss. Lost my old lab a couple of years ago and now training a new yellow. Have a great year

Blasting Bill, one of the est hunts I ever had was a 3 day plantation quail hunt in GA at Pinn Hill Plantation. I went horseback the first day and mue drawn wagon the next two days. Like going back into time.

If it flies we hunt it. Doesn't matter if woods, swamp, field, stream ,marsh or lake. Three Dog night now. All DDs. And this four month old pup. Boy somebody kick me I'm too old to keep up. JW Forgot to add Hare and blood track deer too. Shed hunting next. |
We got after the woodcock big time this fall. Grouse numbers seemed to be way down though!
|
I have been doing some Snipe hunting the last couple of years.( not sure if that is upland bird hunting)
It is like a quail on steriods. Great exercise also, it will where you out. |
I'm a upland hunter at heart. Been chasing the Kansas ringneck for about 20 years now. I have two shorthairs and very rarely miss a weekend. Married a farm girl from Western Kansas, one of the smartest things I've ever done!

I grew up upland hunting with my dad and his dogs, but we are big turkey and deer hunters also. As I got older and old enough to deer hunt on my own I spent a lot of time deer hunting, and been very blessed to have killed some decent bucks over the years. I hate to say it, but I probably went a easy 12 to 13 years without upland hunting with my dad because I was deer hunting, but we still hunted deer and turkey together all those years. Two years ago I killed my buck early in deer season, and decided to go quail hunting with dad, I'm here to tell you all that I had a blast and missed out on a lot of fun not bird hunting with dad and his dogs over all those years. I ended up bird hunting alot with dad the rest of the season, and had a ton of fun. Then this past season I done a whole lot or bird hunting with him, we hunted a bunch here in indiana and we even went out to kansas in january, and had a lot of fun out there. I'll be bird hunting from now on every season.

I go Pheasant and Dove hunting every year. I spend most of my time now trying to encourage a robust resident Pheasant population and less time hunting them.
For over a decade I raised Pheasant to release, but had pitiful results. The survival rate for the first winter was a round 15%. I was hoping to increase the resident breeding population, but didn't have any real success. Now I spend most of my time reducing the Fox, Marten, Crows and other nest robbers trying to give the Pheasant a chance at a comeback. I also plant habitat. My efforts worked out well for the Ducks, the native Pheasant population is static. but not growing. Hare seems to be in about the same situation as Pheasant, static but not doing well. |

I used to and enjoyed hunting with my Irish Settlers. But they have crossed over the rainbow bridge and my health conditions has pretty well slowed me down. But I felt that I was very blessed to have had some great old fashion hunting dogs. Some don’t think that they could be very good hunters. But do the research as with any breed of bird dogs and you would have some great success.. These pics are from Rusty when he was at 6 to 18 months of age. He taught me a lot about the style of hunting he enjoyed. I never had to worry about him running off for long as he would always come back looking for me within around 5 minutes.. |

Since folks are posting pics of their pups, here are mine, German Wirehair Pointer, I have been blessed to have owned great GWP's, this one, Sport may be the best yet, just turned 3, the other is my second Large Munsterlander, Lauger, very good dog, great nose, tracking master. Still a few birds here in Montana to chase around.

New Guy Here
Love upland hunting! I live in So Cal, but do all of my hunting in Arizona. Dove and quail are my passion. I look forward to hunting season every year! I don't have a dog, so I'm at a bit of a disadvantage, but I don't care. Just awesome to be out there.
Really looking forward to the dove opener in Yuma on 9-1-2018. The first dove season runs from the 1st to the 15th of September. I will be out multiple times during this time after White Wings and Morning Dove. Gambles Quail opens in October and I will be hitting the Desert chasing them as well as going after some Mearns near Tucson in the Winter as as well as the second dove season that starts November 23rd. I have friends that live for deer season, and I get it, but for me, it's upland hunting that I truly love! Everyone have a safe and good hunt this season! Robert |
