How to hunt doves or quail?

I' ve never hunted birds I' m assuming you walk through a field until the birds are flushed or sit and wait till they fly overhead. Any advice would be appreciated.

In general, Nathan, you are correct. There are several different types of quial to hunt, in different areas of the USA, but generally to hunt quial, you have to do a lot of walking to find them and then flush them and shoot them. Bird dogs help greatly in finding them and retrieving them. Doves can also be hunted by walking grain fields and flushing them but bird dogs don' t help as much on doves like they do for quial. Generally, the prefered method to hunt doves is to find a fly way or a prefered water source and sit and wait for them to come by and pass shoot them. Both dove and quial are sometimes hard to connect with due to thier flying speed but they both make excellant table fair.

Doves: Check out the fields in the area before hunting them, if you can. Check power lines near fields for doves. Make a note of which field they were near. Once you find' em, go back in the early morning and watch where they fly to & from. This' ll give you some ideas of where to set up.
If you don' t pressure them too much, doves will follow the same routes, but they tend to get spooky and faster towards the end of the season.
Quail: You can hunt them without a dog, but you' ll have a few mini-heart attacks when they bust out from under your feet like atomic powered egg-beaters. If they get spooky, they' ll run rather than flush. Like Howler wrote, a dog helps a lot.

Quail are really fun. You don' t have to be quite all you do is walk through the feild and the quail will hold for a very long time if its the fall until you can almost step on them and then they fly out fast, having pointers for this is good also. Dove almost the same ' cept you can' t get as close.

Wanted to add another note on dove hunting part. When i see a dove approaching me or at least flying in my general direction, i get down on one knee until it gets closer. Then i start to raise my gun up slowely because moving too fast will spook the bird and would fly in a different direction. Dove can fly to 65 mph with when the wind is right. Have to get whatever edge you can when that happens. I dont shoot dove on the ground though. Not very sporting right there.
