I have a small break action 20. Real pretty, real light, shoots like a beast (I've dropped geese with it). I dont care what people say bout single shots. You can have two shots off per flock if you time it right. Probably not to necessary for pheasant though.

For an auto, the Franchi 48al in 20ga is about 5 1/2 to 5 3/4 pounds, depending on barrel length.
For a pump, the old Ithaca M37 Featherweight in 20ga is about the same weight, I believe. But, you'll probably have to search for a good used one.
It seems like lightweight field guns have fallen out of fashion, in favor of heavier target and magnum models. I expect it's because fewer hunters spend long days walking behind bird dogs.
