Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default calling.

OK, I'm new to this particular forum and I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death but I couldn't find any specific info on my question in past posts. What I was wondering is what types of calls imitate hens or gobblers such as yelps, purrs, clucks etc... and which ones to use at what distances. I always thought you were supposed to used yelps when the gobblers are further away and then change to purrs as they got closer. Is this true?

Good to see you here, Bearklr!!

To answer your question, generally, a purr is a close in call, but mostly because it is a soft call and only can be heard up to a certain distance. Clucks and Yelps can be used for any distance, as the loudness/softness of these calls can be varied. What I usually try when calling blindly is to start soft and work into a louder call, then if the bird is coming, I decrease the loudness the closer he gets. Does this makes sense?

I don't yelp once the gobbler gets within 75 yds or so. Turkey's short range hailing communication is a cluck. Yelping within that distance is like yelling in someone's ear to talk to them. There is something off about it and tom's get suspicious. Purrs are indifferent calls made when feeding or just walking around. They are not talking to anyone in particular, just letting each other know where they are.

Bearklr,

Yeah, me and lefty are headed up north for a bear hunt in late August. I can't wait. Taking a bear with the bow is something i've wanted to do for a real long time, and when this opportunity came along, I knew I couldn't pass on it.

Good luck with the turks this spring!!

when hes out past about 75 yards, yelp mainly. once he gets in closer, just cluck and purr mostly. when hes close though, dont call much because he'll find you.
