Default downrange energy?

I hope I say this right

Is there a big difference in killing power at say 40 yrds with 4's, 5's , and 6's. I know the 4's would have more energy, but how big is the drop off with 6's.

I patterned my gun yesterday. At 40 yrds with 6's, my gun was awesome. Even though it patterned good, what are the effective range of the 6's?

Well RBB. Your going to get a lot of different opinions on this one. All I can tell ya is what I've read in a lot of turkey hunting mags. First everything I've read say's that #6's lead do not have enough kanetic energy to ethicly kill a Gobbler at 40 yards. They say #6 lead looses it after about 35 yards... Now #5 lead from what I've read is good out to like 40-45 yards and #4's they say are good out to 55-60 yards if you still have a decent pattrern. Me personally i would not recomend shooting a gobbler past 40-45 yards...

Kinda depends on whether you are using lead or heavyshot. If lead, 40 and under w/ 6's should do the trick. If using heavyshot, maybe 50, but after that, IMO, its too far to shoot.

It has been my experience that you can throw a heavy rock farther than a light rock, of course, as long as it's not TOO heavy. That being said, a heavier shot will hold more momentum downrange. Not at all unsimilar to archery equipment. A heavier arrow will have more kinetic energy, as will heavier shot.

I agrre that lead 6's loose alot of energy past forty yards. I shoot 6's and have killed turkeys graveyard dead up to 40 yards but farther than 40 it just doesn't hit them very hard. My gun patterns 6's the best and has a killable pattern out to 55 yards but since I shoot 6' I want shoot them past forty. Last year I missed jugded the yardage and shot one at 47 yards, I broke him down and I don' think he could have got away but I had to step on his head to kill him.
