Mr. Longbeard, no, I can't really tell how many are 7's. No doubt it's many of them. However, the larger shot seems to hang to the center of the pattern well. Somthing about Nitro Ray's method of loading seems to do that.
Preacher, many of you know him from the boards, did some testing of these shells and lead shells in various sizes. His tests into thick plywood showed the hevi shot 7's penetrated a tad bit better than lead 6's.
I trust the 7's in the hevi shot to kill a turkey. It's also a comfort to know that so many of them hit the bird too!
They are field proven to me. I killed my second Rio last year without the benefit of a rear sight, which had been torn off my gun by hanging on my vest. (Cheap factory fiber optic.) I was on an out of town hunt and had no choice other than to keep hunting without the back sight. I shot the bird at 45 yards (had trouble judging distance in that more open hill country) and hit him low because I had no rear sight. In cutting the breast up later, I recovered several of the 7's that had penetrated both breasts and come to rest just under the skin on the "far" side of the bird from where the shot went in. I put probably 15 shot thru the breast and about five were removed during cleaning. Most went thru and thru the 20 lb. bird at 45 yards. It appeared to be plenty of killing penetration to me.
I would think if it can penetrate like that it can penetrate the skull and spine at the same distance.
