I like a turkey vest for one main reason and thats simply to haul my bird out of the woods in.Pockets and stuff are a plus.I hunt with a few fellas though that carry one call to the woods a few shells and not much more and dont see the need in spending money on a vest!To each his own..
My dad happens to be one of these type of hunters. He carrys his birds out of the woods using a turkey tote and I ran across this article on how to make a homemade one using your favorite piece of wood or even deer antler thought it was pretty cool, here ya go.....
Toting a huge tom from the woods to the road can be quite tiring. (Sure wish I had the problem more often!) A handy homemade tote sure makes the job easier. They're a breeze to make, too!
There are several different totes on the market that do a good job carrying a bird, but most render the turkey in less-than-perfect condition for mounting or caping. Neck feathers are generally torn from the skin and wing and body feathers can be crumpled or otherwise damaged.
This tote will keep your turkey in much better condition. To build one you need only two materials: heavy nylon cord (strong enough to hold the weight of a tom) and a one-inch by four-inch piece of dowel rod (I often substitute a piece of deer antler for the dowel - use a piece from the antler base that fits your hand).
Procedure
Cut antler or dowel rod to length
Find the midpoint on the length of antler or rod and mark counter-sink hole.
Drill a 3/8-inch hole through the antler or rod.
Cut a 16-inch length of cord.
Double the cord, slide the loose ends through the hole and tie a knot to prevent the cord from slipping through.
To use, loop the cord around the turkey's legs and sling the bird over your shoulder!
