Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default A little turkey story...

well, froman was driving along scoping out the fields that we hunt sunday night when he saw a flock of turkeys out in the corner of this field where we usually hunt. from previous experience, we knew they would roost in the trees there. so we head out early monday morning before school and try to get a turk with a bow. i was doin the shooting, while froman was videotaping. we were walking in at about the same time as we did on our last turkey hunt there, but this time they were already out of roost and it was still dark. the sky was lit up, but the ground and woods were still black. this was about 6:20 a.m. when i notice these turkeys already out in the field, i saw something that i am not used to seeing this time of year, it was a tom out there strutting his stuff! we snuck into the woods to get a better look at them and some of them grew suspicious, so they all moved to the other side of the field. we then notice a huge tom still up in a tree to our left, we got him on camera for a little while, then suddenly the turkeys that had left us were spooked and fluttered all over. being so early in the year, none of us brought a call, so we let the little guy i take to school start yelping with his mouth. he was doing a lost yelp when we heard a gobble from the other side of the field! this got us pretty fired up, and we encouraged him to call once again since those turkeys had been scattered. before we knew it, we had a few different toms gobbling, then out of no where this tom flys right by us and out to our right! i turned and looked right through a shooting lane at this bird. it was about 25 yards out and i was fixing to draw when froman turned into my path! i then whispered to him to move and told him he was in my way, he tried, but that bird saw him and ran away. we were just all in a bad position and this bird caught us off guard, but we will soon be able to take one with a bow before the archery season goes out on turks. am i wrong, because we all asumed that our season isn't going to be very good here if they are already gobbling and strutting? our season opens april 1st.
