After 4 years of hunting hard I broke the ice. The first week this year I hunted hard. The third day of season I had Tom coming to calling and had a coyote come out into the field and spook off the turkey when he was 75 yards. Thursday night my buddy called me and told me he will take me friday after school.
Friday I come home from school and Jeremy is at my house waiting on me. The weekend before he had shot at a big tom and missed, and also called in a tom and couldn't get a shot. He told me he guarantees and one of us would shoot a turkey between 5-6:30. We headed to the woods with our hopes high. At about 4:45 we had a turkey come into a field and I screwed up and moved and it saw me. I couldn't tell what it was because of brush but Jeremy later told me it was a hen. When the hen was putting away I grabbed my box call and tried to mimick(sp?) it. It got far enough back in the woods it quit and I started purring. When I did that I got a gobble about 200 yards away. I called some and he would gobble. After a string of about 15 gobbles I could tell he was coming, so I shut up. After about 10 minutes of not much gobbling, he ripped a gobble off about 75 yards away on the field edge we were on. Then I saw him in full strut. He would strut parallel to us 5-6 steps and then back the other direction then take a step or two forward. After repeating this process for 20 minutes he was finally at 40 yards. He was starting to act funny and really looking around. I had a limb to my left and couldn't get a shot so i whispered to Jeremy(3yards away) to take the shot. I guess he couldn't get a shot either and the turkey started moving to my right. As soon as the turkey came into my sights I squeezed the trigger and he went down. An awesome hunt and an awesome turkey.
