the alarm putt
This is just a little something to think about. My hunting partner was practicing his calling yesterday. This will be his first year turkey hunting so he not too familiar with turkey talk. I noticed his calls had the classic "alarm putt" of a turkey in them. I told him this would scare off any educated turkey. I got to thinking and realized probably half of the callers out there at some time hit the alarm call on accident, yet kill birds consistently. I was just wondering why yall think this does not alarm the turkey.

RE: the alarm putt
I think that if that putt is quickly followed by some purrs and clucks that it settles things back down. I have hit a shaper cluck than I intended before and got an alerted reaction---but when I started purring again---things settled down.

RE: the alarm putt
I believe the alarm putt has to be given in a successive sequence for it to alarm birds that aren't in sight of the bird giving the alarm. When the alarm putt is given when turkeys are grouped together, the body posture of a bird will also indicate a threat and tell the rest of the flock that it's time to vacate the premisses. Most of the time with new hunters/callers, they do not deliver the correct sequence of the alarm putt but do hit a few of the same calling notes.

when we get them in range we ususally putt a few time to stop them..they stop and look around for a second....thats all it takes.....dont know what theyd do afterwards...probally take off....but they are always flopping on the ground.....ive always been told to keep them out of my calling......and dont want to take a chance........
