It's great! Seriously I've only done it once with a buddy of mine. You use the dog to break up the flock and then call them back together.
Some guys use smaller dogs like terriers. They train them to crawl inside a bag and lay next to the hunter after flushing the flock.
What about this has you mad?

I agrre with Poult. If they were legal here I'd have one too. These old legs just don't move as they used to tryin to get a good scatter. You would still have to do the scoutin, callin and shootin. The dog is just doin the scatter so yeah I'd be for it.

What the heck Jalvja, You do have a good dog.. You just don't treat him well. Youre good to him during the season, but after the season, you put him away till next year and don't even look at him.

I dont see why there would be a need for a dog. But its just my opinion. I know anytime there is a dog/hunting discussion regarding dogs and deer, there is always a major controversy between those where its legal and a tradition and those where its not legal and not a tradition.
For me, I cannot see why it would add to the value of a fall hunt. If you need a dog to make Turkeys fly and break up the flock then you have a far different turkey than we do....

This discussion came up on the NWTF board also, glad to see it's friendler here. Hunting with a dog in the fall is a blast! I have only done it twice but hope to have a Boykin Spaniel in the next couple of years just for this reason. For those that have never done it, find someone who does and tag along. You will learn and have fun Here are several good articles on hunting with turkey dogs....
