I just got a turkey cd off ebay. Just got it and used it today. It has cackling on it. Don't know which kind though. I'm good using the cackle on slate.

Another cackling question... If you do get cackling down on a slate, fly down cackle to be specific, how do you simulate wing flapping with your hands occupied with a call? I know slapping my hat against my leg sounds pretty good, but how the heck do you cackle on a friction call while you are doing that? just curious what everybody does...

Clap your feet together.

Seriously, let your partner slap his hat on his leg. If you're hunting without a partner, don't do a wingbeat. Sometimes they just sail off the limb.

the easiest way to cackle is on a slate, glass, or box. I don't think its that hard on a diaphram once you learn how to do it. The diaphram is also more realistic, IMHO, if you learn how to get the pitch. Getting the rhythm on one can be difficult for some to do since it starts out with a few clucks then breaks into a face pace. But if you know how to cut on one then you shouldn't have any problems.

On a Slate ,, start your clucks from the center area of the call , and work up to the out side edge, this will give you the Low pitch into the higher excited cackling you hear. I would not worry about the sound as of a hat , if you really want to do it , do it after you have made the call. Not all turkeys cackle when they come down ...BT
