Default Rifle for turkeys?

lI was wondering how many of you use a rifle for turkeys and if so what caliber. My dad has a 223 over 12 ga from Savage and it seems to be a good turkey gun. If you use a rifle, do you use full metal jacket bullets or rapid expanding, fragmenting, all energy inside the bird bullets?

Only shotgun is legal in my state. shotgun with turkey load will leave you with plenty of meat . That rifle may blow it all to nothing. not ethical

I'm talking about killing turkeys humanely rather than wounding them so that they may fly off and die without recovery so get off by back about being unethical that is not what this post is about, especially since you do not even know how the rifle would perform.

Man, is this a can of worms! Most turkey hunters enjoy calling birds therefore using a rifle doesn`t make sense. Here it`s illegal to use a rifle. Shooting a turkey with a rifle is one of those, to each their own things but then I don`t share the spring woods with rifle hunters either.

IMHO a .223 isnt that bad of a rifle to kill a turkey with. As for the bullets: a fast expanding bullet will destroy alot of meat and kill the turkey dead. A FMJ will not destroy much meat, but it will also whistle off into the next county if it does hit something hard after going through the bird. I quess the choice is yours, what bullet to use. Just be sure of your backstop when you shoot. Not only do we want to have fun out there, we want to be safe also. Hope this helps you out.

Well, we are restricted to shotguns here in Oregon also. I have talked to people who like to hunt with whatever the heck they want to hunt with and some have used .22 cals. The reasoning is if your a good enough shot and you hit them in the kill zone they'll drop dead right know with little or no damage to the meats....so I've heard.

Cant wait to go hunting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! turk
