I am interested in getting a custom or hand made striker and I have noticed that they are made in different types of wood. I have seen some in zebra, bocote, paduak, hickory, and so forth. I guess different woods will give off different sounds, but which wood do you like the best and why.
I will be using a glass surface made by primos. (I forgot the name of the call but it is the orange glass call). I have a carbon striker that came with the call but I lost the purple heart striker.
Thanks,

I make my own strikers for my slate and the only two woods I will use on it are maple and cedar. I didn't think the maple would work, but it sure makes that old slate sing
The cedar works very well for softer calling especially when the bird is coming in.
Maple gives you a higher pitch. BB

I tried purpleheart on my slates and glass calls -- didn't like it at all. Maybe I got a bad peice of wood. Dunno. I make a few slates for gifts and fun. I use crabapple and persimmon for them. They work pretty good. Wish I had some walnut or chestnut, though.
