I shoot the Mossberg 835 for turkeys. It costs much less than the 870 and came with Tru Glo sights and sling swivel studs. It was already camoed and with the money I saved I' m putting in a Rhino choke and getting some Nitro Hevi-shot to make it a real turkey thumper!
But, if you want to do some wingshooting too, go with the 870. The Mossy is a great turkey gun but that' s all I use it for. Wouldn' t want to wingshoot with mine. Too bulky, doesn' t point real well for wingshooting, plus it' s ported.
BT had it pegged for a good all-round shotgun combo. 870 in 12 and 20 for you and your son sounds like just what you' re looking for.

One thing I would add.......in addition to getting a 12 gauge for yourself, get the young lad a 12 gauge too.
If you reload, you can reduce the amount of shot so that it kicks like a 20 gauge, but still has good shot velocity. That way, he won' t need a second gun in a few years.

Clint, thats exactly what we did and also what i started on.Obviously the young man needs to be strong enough to handle the 12,but it was no problem for myself and 2 of my 3 boys.I' ll start my 3rd one next year!

I concur with most here.....a pair of Remington 870s. For you either the 870 Express of 870 Super Mag and for the kid....870 Youth Model 20 gauge.
