I took a box of the xtended range 3 inch number 5 and a box of the new longbeards 3 inch number 5's to a field this weekend to see how they stacked up. I usually never take 40 yard shots but thats where I compared them. Using a turkey target both loads would of easily of killed the bird. But the hit count using the longbirds were consistently much higher then the xtended range. I was impressed to say the least. I spent months last year trying to track down some xtended range shells since winchester was discontinuing them. I do think winchester has made a very decent replacement product for them tho.

yea they definitely put a lot more pellets on target than traditional lead turkey loads but I hope that people don't for get there still lead turkey loads and I hope we still try to keep our shots 50 yards and under...

I dont have a picture but they are called Longbeards. I thought the same thing about them being lead, I cant see somebody taking a 60 yard shot with them. I took a few 50 yard shots and my pellet count on turkey targets started to show wounded turkeys in the mix of dead ones. At 40 though my old shotgun loves them. I thought the xtended range shells were the best out there but these are pretty impressive.I wonder how much energy is in each pellet at 60 yards, tungsten vs lead.

outdoor life did test in the winchester long beards vs standard winchester turkey shells in there Feb 2014 issue. at 70 yards they had 56 pellets of number 6 in a 10" circle. they where using a Mossberg 835 with xx full choke and 18" barrel. they had 1 3/4" penetration in the ballistic gel.

How does that 1.75" gel penetration translate into a thick mat of turkey feathers?

Don't hit him in the feathers.... . Hit him in that ugly head!

I've pulled all my Winchester supremes from my vest and replaced them with #4 Long Beards. They shoot excellent out of my 870 and Pure Gold .670 choke. Nearly twice the pellets in a 12" diameter circle at 40 yds. I agree they probably won't have the energy to consistently kill at 60 yds, but I'm not planning on taking that long of a shot anyways. I'm still going to shoot one more shell before the season comes in, at about 15 yds and see what it looks like. These are great shells.
