I missed out on the first 2 seasons I turkey hunted this year in 2 different counties. Almost connected in the 4th season on a silent tom sneaking in and then a strutter got blown out by 4 deer in the corn.
5th season I go down and hunt with a motorcycle roadie of mine by Pudacah KY side in Illinois. We see a tom 3 times thursday eve in the same basic 10acre field, roost him that night.
Next AM we are in the field by 0500hrs, in pop up blind, POURING RAIN!!!!! Have a Mobile tom with 2 hen dekes 15yds from blind in cut corn. 0645hrs, 3 hens feed to within 5yds of blind then to dekes. Hear tom on roost less then 80yds across creek gobble only 2 times so far.
Hear/watch him fly off roost to our field with 3 live birds and 3 dekes out in open, to only re-roost above blind 20yds out and up!!!! My buddy has be involved in over 150 turkey harvests and has never seen this before. Hens have fed across field now over 50yds from us. Buddy says that I better take him before he leaves and goes over to the hens and be gone for me.
I wanted to take my first bird with my bow, but faceing this situation, I was forced to take the X2 and 2oz of copper 5's and at 0707hrs, I cancelled his afternoon fly down flight with a crash landing!!!!!! 19lbs, 11" beard, 1-1/8th spurs. Not bad for first bird. Rather would have had a GrimReapper broadhead do it and been on the ground, but here in Illinois, its legal to take them in the tree after 0700hrs.
We figure that he had been whoopped of late by another tom and thought that was him in the field and did not want another confrontation. We hunted the next 4 days for my partner to take his last tag and he finally conected 2 days after I left with a tad smaller tom that I had taken.
