Question about spurs?
I have a quick question about preserving turkey spurs. I shot my best bird to date Monday which had 1.25" and 1.375" spurs. I cut on both sides of the spur taking out a 3/4" section of the leg with the spur on it. I've seen guys make a necklace kind of deal or just a piece of leather to hang them from. My question is my bird is an eastern and does the black on the spur come off? It kind of looks like a sleeve like the true bone is underneath and the black outside coloring is almost nothing more than a shell. Not sure wether it stays or goes and dont wanna mess them up before I know for sure. If someone could tell me wether to leave the black on or take it off before I put some clear coat on them I would appreciate it. Thanks for any input and good luck to all.

Just put a little Borax or salt on the cuts and leave it alone to dry. Nothing else needs to be done and it should stay like it is forever. Here's my best one from 2006 with 1 1/2" spurs, 10 1/2" paintbrush beard, and the fan is 30"wide and 20" high.
