Saturday May 5th.,2nd time out to hunt for myself and got this Jake for my first bird of the season.
The hunt itself was nothing spectacular but the ending was good.
5:30 AM I hear gobbling and although I was sure they sounded like jakes I was determined to shoot one today as I haven't patterned a Tom in the vicinity lately. They were sounding off but didn't seem to be in tune with my calls and all gobbling stopped as they hit the ground.
7:30AM almost 2 hrs now and I haven't heard or seen anything.
I decided they have to be on the field North of me and I just happen to know a shortcut through cover going there. I first spotted them about 100 ft. in the middle of this alfafa field what looks to be 3 hens and 4 strutting Toms(later with binoculars they looked more like Jakes).
Finding a suitable Pine tree at the edge of the field, I started calling with my slate call getting no response, but they seem to come my way some. 30 minutes later at about 60 yds. I switched to a mouth call yelping and the hen responded with a cluck, so I clucked. She didn't like that and proceeded to come to confront me towing the whole gang with her.I had all the time to choose which of the jakes to take.
The jake was on the take at 15 yds. Funny thing the rest of the jakes just stayed around for a while with the hens running away after the shooting.
18 lbs juvenile male with 1/2 inch spur & 3 inches beard...
Just what my wife ordered. Should be good eating.
