So our season ended yesterday, May 1st. I hunted a few times after killing my first one hoping for a trophy but none would come close and tried 3 different spots. Well a friend called me Monday night and said he wanted one to eat. I was like well the season ends tomorrow but Ill try.
Hunted Tuesday morning before my doctor's appointment and didnt even see a bird. Had a final today so I called and said sorry no bird because I needed the afternoon to study.
Well I was taking a piss around 4pm and my bathroom window overlooks one of my fields that was just planted and the corn was coming up nicely. Saw a nice bird out in the field about 60 yards out. Wasnt a monster but not a baby either and since this was for meat I figured Id shoot it. But it was way too far for my shotgun and I knew as soon as I open my backdoor hes gonna run. So I grabbed my grandfather's old .22 and put 4 bullets in.
Sure enough bird started running back to the woods wide open. I took aim and dropped him with my first shot. Must have severed his spine cause he was flopping around on the ground a lot. Took my axe with me and cut off his head to quickly finish him off. 18 pounds and a 7" beard. Didnt think I could shoot a bird on the run with open sights. Hell I had a hard enough time using a scope during deer season lol. So I guess my friend gets a bird to eat after all
