For me, it all depends on the situation. This spring I used a tactic in Wisconsin that has been successful before. A first light I walked along the edge of a field about 20 yards in the woods and yelped as I walked along. I' d stop every so often and yelp, then walk along. I want to sound and act like a hen walking along as much as possible. I covered the one side of the field and setup on a lower edge of the back. Just when I sat down a gobbler sounded off and eventually came in.
Earlier this spring, I was setup with my camera and call one morning getting some practice in before my hunts. It was a park reserve where hunting isn' t allowed so I' d spent some mornings out there observing and calling. I setup close to a gobbler who was roosted and after gobbling for awhile I called to him. He responded and so did the hen sitting next to him. I mimicked her calls and as she got louder so did I. She was really getting mad that I was infringing on her turf and flew down to within about 5 yards of me. She called again a few times and then got spooky and flew off. I got a chance to hear her up close and will remember that for a long time to come.
Typically in the morning I' ll try a few soft yelps, flap my homemade turkey wing on the branches, and start clucking/purring a little. Scratching leaves. It worked on my Minnesota hunt this year as a late season gobbler took what he could find and that was me!!
