This will be my first year turkey hunting. I have a SuperNova and need some help understanding various chokes. I was told the Briley .655 would be a good choice for lead and the Briley .665 for hevi-shot. After doing some reading I see the Pure Gold .670 also getting great reviews. And even the Jelly Head .655 was getting solid reviews.
So here is my question. What does the constriction number really mean and how is different shot type/size effected by the various constrictions.
Any help clarifying this would be great and if anyone has a supernova which choke/shot did you find worked the best.
Thanks

MN,
It's really much easier then remembering names like "pure gold" & "jelly head"...........
The only thing you need to know is that you want an extended X-full turkey choke (period).
Now, spend as much as you'd like (BTW - the name Briley is extremely well respected).

While the i.d. of a choke constriction is an indication of how tight it is, there is no guarentee that your gun will produce tighter patterns with it. Generally, an extended choke tube will always give you better patterns than flush mounted tubes, and you need a tighter choke to get a dense pattern with lead shot than with hevi-shot. The lead-free shot types need a more open choke to get good patterns. Diameters of .665 or smaller should give you a pretty good pattern with lead, but .670 or .675 should give you a better pattern with hevi-shot. However each gun is a law onto itself. "Your results may vary". It boils down to trying your gun with different shot/choke combinations to see what it likes best.
