The 'Old' 870s are more reliable but todays 870 is just chocked full of stamped parts rather than machined! Remington cheapened that gun up a ton!

Nova - you can cycle sand with it.

I have owned and turkey hunted with both. Started with a Remington 870, and it killed several birds. Then I got a Benelli Nova, and for methe differencewas like night and day. Some complain of the pump slide on the nova rattling, but evidently Benelli fixed that problem because I've never noticed that. The nova is hands down the toughest shotgun I've ever owned, mine has been drug through mud, brush, briars, been poured on by rain, completely submerged underwater, and still looks and operates just like it did out of the box. With an Indian Creek choke tube my nova throws good patterns even with cheap turkey loads, and with hevi shot the patterns are phenomonal. Love mine, and although the nova costs more, in my eyes the extra money is well worth the extra quality you get. Hope this helps.

I have a Benelli Nova, Rem 870 Express, and Mossberg 835... Out of these 3,for turkey (not waterfowl), I like the Mossberg 835the best.. If you're not scared of a little kick, it will take care of a turkey at decent range with just a factory choke, given you've found a good shell that works well with it. Winchester HV do well with it.

There area lot of good guns out there, I like many different types. But turkey season calls for the Mossberg it seems. This is more of an opinion-seeking thread, but there's a lot of good suggestions here. Good luck, have fun.

I had a nova and still have a 870 and i would love a old 870 but the newer ones are cheap. moss 500/835 are solid and reliable.

when it gets down to it either one, when cleaned regularly and useing the right shells and choke, will kill a turkey just fine. although i do not and dont plan on ever getting an 870 i have heard horror stories about jamming. (granted i have also heard those about almost every gun...) i have shouldered the 870 and compared to the nova it seems like a weaker gun. i know it sounds weird but the nova just has a heft that the 870 does not. but thats just my .02$

That sums it up right there. My first gun was an 870 and it was rusty right out of the box it never did cycle well even when clean. I have since gone to a Benelli M2 and I never looked back. But Remington did come out with a new 870 that has all the metal on the outside coated with a real tough plastic. It is not called an 870 but I think that it may be the same gun.

Here is the link to the new 870 it is called the 887

870's a good gun... The Novas also a good gun but a little on the light, plastic feeling side.
