Default Hevi Shot-which load in 3 inch

What is the general thought on which 3 inch hevi shot load would be the best to use. I currently have a box of 5 of the 1 5/8 ounce of 6`s. I see that they also have a 2 ounce load in the 3 inch shell also-they are a little tough to find here in central Illinois. Also what size shot does everyone recommend 4`s, 5`s or 6`s.
This is for a 12 gauge gun. Thanks for the help.

Hevi shot #6 has the energy of #4 lead, it should be good to about 50 yards. By the time that you're far enough away to need more energy than that I doubt that you'll have enough pattern density with either #4 or #5 shot for an effective shot.

jmo for what its worth

The 2oz version is quite superior to the 1-5/8oz shell.
I recommend the #6's, they will carry turkey killing energy beyond 60 yards....much much farther than you will get an adequate pattern with.

I'll add one more you can't find. Hevi-13 in 1 3/4 oz. These white shell loads out perform the 2oz in my gun and choke. The 1 5/8 is just not even close. It just goes to show that the name brand everyone talks about is not the thing to focus on. You also need to know how that shell is loaded. I am dissappointed that they constantly change thier load. Clearly it is to generate more sales with guys buying all new loads. Thankfully I stocked up on any and all white shelled 1 3/4 oz Hevi-13 shells.

I agree that the knock down power of #6 is just fine. I've dropped gobblers like a stone at long ranges and so I would not want to give up apttern density with fewer pellets in the larger shots. Go with #6.

No reason to shoot the larger shot sizes with Hevi-13. Stick with the 2oz #6 load because it contains more pellets which = bettern pattern density which = more hits in the head/neck which = dead turkey.

I wanted the 2oz #6 loads... But I waited just a tad bit to long to buy... So I had to get the 2oz #5's... I've heard people say they pattern pretty good also...

You can still get the Hevi-13 in a 1.75oz shell, but they do not hold a candle to the old white ones.
The old white 1.75oz shells were made for EnvironMetal by another company when they were being produced. They really liked to be choked tight, and I believe that they are probably the best made commercially manufactured load ever made. It was not uncommon to be able to get 200+ pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards with the #6's......thats with a 1.75oz load people!

Obviously the gun/choke combo decides what load size you should shoot but I know thatour guns, especially tipped with the Indian Creek choke, favor the 3"- 2oz.- #6 Hevi-13 loads.
